  • I was thinking they may have a process like 3D metal sintering, using a laser to fuse powdered metal layers. In the very early days of that technology I saw a small polyhedra frame like a ball. The texture was very granulated and it felt like it would crumble if it you rubbed it between your fingers too roughly. But it was titanium and indeed a lot stronger than its appearance suggested.

    This was (obviously) a very long time ago back when people were Frankensteining their own printers from components and off the shelf options were few and far between and prohibitively expensive. When the early adopters were losing their minds on the daily trying to calibrate, level and troubleshoot all the gribbles and gremlins. It was quite a deterrent to entering the hobby. I couldn’t imagine then that the technology would accelerate so quickly, to the point where a first time user can unbox, assemble and be printing accurate and tidy prints in under an hour.

    Seeing what is happening with metal and glass printing these days is still blowing my mind. I love that we’re living in a time where there is so much interesting and fun stuff to discover and so much of it is being shared instead of hoarded.

I knew about the mitre and it seems like the popes have the same type of regalia/ornamental discretion as the US President does in many official aesthetic choices. I can’t help but think of the practicality that is always behind any kind of pomp and ceremony like this. There’s always some guy called Marty whose Sister went to school with a guy who calls in a favour to get him a job doing something like holding the pope’s “wee willy winky” on official outings when he has to take a whizz, because the frock and accessories prohibit practical access solo.

Reckon there is like a closet with one of each size that he tries on and then has like three of them made in his size? Like the first appearance is in the demo/loaner model - and asap thereafter his custom one(s) gets made? I wonder who the papal milliner is? Do they also do the Swiss guard uniforms? I had no idea how many logistical questions I had about all this! 🤔

  • In seriousness, it’s often about water pressure and how your hot water is fed. If you have very high water pressure normally but a solar hot water system where gravity and input pressure play a role, you’ll naturally have an imbalance on hot and cold. When you turn the handle on the shower you’re lining up two holes in the shower cartridge (in the handle) with the two hot and cold water pipes, the resulting mix comes out a third hole which feeds the shower head. As you turn the handle, one hole opening gets smaller and the other bigger- thereby changing the ratio of hot : cold. When you already have a huge pressure of cold water pumping in, the degree of rotation needed to go from warm/almost just right to PURE HOT WATER is minuscule. Usually the cold will stay pretty cold for about half of the handle range of motion too.

    If water input pressure being high is a problem you can put a reducing valve on your system overall or you can buy Venturi style pumps which add pressure into your hot water system.

    You’ll normally find when it’s pressure imbalance that it’s easier to balance the temp when the tap isn’t open full bore. But who wants a weak-ass shower stream!!
