  • The realistic part of it is that we only have to convince a few neighbors at a time to grow it, and reach out to like minds to build the circle of communities. Right now my fights are paying off my house and saving money for it to build a equity base i can contribute and trying to nudge my communities credit unions to supporting coop housing loans.

    Ive been too swamped but i was volunteering more with Habitat for Humanity too which would be a great partner for the land trust housing (where people own the invidual houses/condos) and the housing coop for people that dont want the indiviual responsobilty of ownership (but shouldnt be exploited by land lords all the same).

    Tenent unions are really interesting options as well to get people organized and slow the grinding wheel down some. I wonder if a tenet union offering rental insurance, legal support, and price transparency might be a good starting place before full collective barganing.

  • Personally i think it would have to work as a series of institutions that each person is part of. Maybe a geographic organization that acts on municiple levels and coordinates with other municiple level orgs with a higher level org that coordinates agendas and the like.

    But there some things that would make sense being technically bound by skill set. So more anarcho sydicalist structures for technocratic orgnizations as well.

    Its honestly why i try to join democratic orgs where i can. My insurace is a mutual fund, my bank a credit union, grocery coop, electric coop, etc A lot of my software is devoloped in KDEs system whish is pretty democratic as well.

    Im saving up with the intention to create a dual community land trust and housing coop in my area as well. Just taking back ownership out of autocrats hands where i can.

    But honestly got all of nodes (some new hardware, some minipcs, some old laptops, some ewaste servers, some raspberry pies, a VM off my Macbook), all in my harvestet cluster. I got Rancher running as a vcluster as well so messed some with Rancher provisioned rke2 clusters too.

    Played some with nutanix as a vm in that cluster (what a fing nightmare, anr not virtual hardware just Nutanix ...). Playing with ESXI now (its not happy about my amd chips so far...). And also my virtual harvester cluster. Easy so far but i want to get more ambitoius in creating a mock deployment, network and all, so i can test crazier configs without losing a day to rebuilding a cluster via thumb drive again...

    Also managed some risk and got my ISP to let me do dual modems on the same bus and configed OpenWRT to load balance between them and via usb my wifi hotspot. Still working with them to try and get more IPs so can use the 4 total ports on my modem stacks to attach to both of my routers.

    I like tinkering with junk, so the other half of my hobby is just risk mitigation (which i also enjoy).

  • K3s, RKE2 and Harvester are all really easy to do at home. Harvester is its own os so its more for if you have a homelab but i have rke2 running on every pc in my house including the pies.

  • It seems like multikernel technologies's solution of kernel on dedicated cores but shareing hardware and kerbel IPC adds more novel use cases (like live kernel hand offs!) But this is probally better in isolation caps (closer to trad vms).

    man the scale of proc isolation from unikernal to kernel mods to ebpf to threads to children to forks to seperate procs to wasm to cgroups to containers to lxd to multi kenerl with ipc and now parker and finally full on virtualized hardware.

    All of that running in combinations on the same CPU. Itll be really cool to see what kind of abstractions we will make to make it easier to compose all that into patterns that are useful.

I am so excited to see SUSE, Fedora, KDE, GNOME, Mozzilla, the free desktop foundation, GNU, the linux kernel group and i imagine many more all have stand alone git forges for many of their projects. If I could hit any git forge and explore and interact with all of these groups at once PLUS independent projects would be amazing to me.

    Also large orgs like governments also could more meaningfully engage with othet orgs and sub orgs

  • They are the only dectralized cloud computing platform i know, with BIONIC, pedals.ai, and kobald.ai all being being very application specific and no privacy in them.

    That said i also didnt like the UX and so i havent really used them

  • First design things to work fully offline. Full airgap between the system and the rest of the world. Then introduce features to update that airgapped system from one way data transfers (like sneakernetting a hard drive/USB/disk/tape). Then introduce additional features to get that data from a network but cached local. Then introduce networked features, and only if connecting to another independent system is absolutely needed.

    Basically stick what has worked in tech and avoid developing SaaS. At least if you are making something for users and not shareholders.

  • Unfortunately modems have the issue that they are made to be provisioned, configured, and owned by the ISP. At least that's how most DOCSIS setups I've seen work.

    The only hope I'm seeing (I'm also wanting to do this) is running my own CMTS. I found a service (https://github.com/cablelabs/os-provisioning is the only opensource tool I've seen before) but I am still trying to figure out a reasonable cost way to connect that server to the actual network (so far bladerf sdr is ny best hair brained idea, which is really only cost effective because I want to play with 5g too). The last bit of luck I have is that my ISP isn't actually doing firmware updates on my modems, so if I connected them to my Internet lab network, provisioned my custom OS and firmware, and then connected it back to the ISP I can get their DOCSIS config. In theory at least 😅

    Netgear has modems that have their OS and firmware in nice packages with build instructions at least. ARIS's older modem code is out there too but a pain compared to get.

    You technically could use that same sdr as the modem on your ISPs network BUT because it's actually RF the FCC regulates it (for good reason I guess lol).

    I mean honestly though, I'm pro clean energy. I'm pro shutting down the coal industry. But have you actually heard anyone from there talk about what they want or what theyre concerns are?
