  • This is one of the issues with the tech side of their business. They've been around a long time, and certain features that other databases had in the 90s were just put into Oracle a few years back. Devs don't always have a good handle on the new capabilities, especially when the old code without the feature is done and working.

    tl;dr: they’re all in on AI (their own model, FastGPT, which is terrible), they make some very questionable business decisions with limited funds, and have a poor understanding of what Personally Identifiable Information (PII) actually is.

    I could compromise on some of these things, but if I’m going to pay for their service as a Google alternative, I need to compromise less than I do with Google already.

    The Peace of Westphilla is often considered a point in time where the Church lost major political influence over international politics. Nation states would negotiate with each other without the Church being an official mediator. The white christian nationalists behind Trump are trying to undo this. Trump obviously only cares about them in so far as they vote for him, but he's happy to push their idea.

    In short, the Young Earth Creationist position is that all the plate tectonics and radiological dating issues happened because of the flood. This means the plates would have to have moved very fast, and the resulting friction creates heat. Incredible amounts of heat. Likewise, radioactive decay releases heat, too. To do all the changes necessary to do that in the space of about a year it would generate enough heat to turn the entire planet into a plasma.

    This may actually be "checkmate, YEC!", at least in a sense. Not because they'll change their mind about God or anything, but because they prefer to have physical solutions if possible. It's easier to convince other people if you keep reliance on the supernatural to a minimum. But there's just no way around this one. You have to rely on the supernatural to fix it. There's just too much heat, otherwise.

  • I mean, I guess. Power output isn't what I'm really hoping for on new battery tech. What we have is perfectly capable of 0-60 times that only thoroughbred performance street cars can meet (like Ariel Atom territory), and the top speed is plenty.

    Once you're putting down 500hp, tires start to become a limiting factor. The torque that goes behind that number can stress the limit on all but the largest tires with the stickiest compounds.

    Safety, range, and weight reduction of new battery tech are great, though.

  • It's more about the batteries than the motor. You can make a motor that sucks down as much power as you want. The battery can't necessarily provide that without damage.

  • It's been interesting to watch how the industry treats OOP over time. In the 90s, JavaScript was heavily criticized for not being "real" OOP. There were endless flamewars about it. If you didn't have the sorts of explicit support that C++ provided, like a class keyword, you weren't OOP, and that was bad.

    Now we get languages like Rust, which seems completely uninterested in providing explicit OOP support at all. You can piece together support on your own if you want, and that's all anyone cares about.

    JavaScript eventually did get its class keyword, but now we have much better reasons to bitch about the language.

  • I don't really want to defend them in this thread, but generally they compete on quality, not price. They refused to get involved in the race to the bottom that Ender basically won.

    That said, I don't think that's true anymore, either. Some companies have emerged that are higher quality than Ender, but not that much more expensive. They're probably close to Prusa quality now.
