  • Salt participates in chemical reactions of cooking beyond just being salty. You do notice in other ways.

I know someone who had to go on a salt-free diet for a while. She said that she once broke down crying because of how bland everything tastes.

My wife also has an aunt who's doctor told her to cut back on salt. She interpreted that as no salt, ever. You can always tell what dish she brought to dinner.

  • There are definitely things we can do with more power. Real time ray tracing for the entire scene, no upscaling tricks, at 1440p and 120fps would be amazing.

Outside of games, hardware that can solve protein folding would have massive implications for healthcare. Think of all the new drugs pharmaceutical companies can create and then upcharge 10000%.

  • It's most useful because it's popular. I can travel to the other side of the country, find a local game shop, and sit down at a group and have a shared understanding of the rules.

  • Jokes on them, the nearest Boston Market to me is in another state.

  • The shutdown would end tomorrow if Republicans were 10% less cruel. That's really all the Democratic demand comes down to.

On the one hand, it's more of the same establishment Dem strategy of spending a lot of effort to get very little. From a political perspective, though, I can see the appeal here. Dems aren't asking for much. Just be slightly less cruel. It's an easy sell to the American people that Republicans would have to compromise very little, and therefore continuing the shutdown is on them.

  • He keeps trying to start a war. Other countries see it for what it is and mostly ignore it. Iran, Venezuela, and now Nigeria.

  • I bet it comes with a condescending "you really need to think things through" attached, too. I've ran into the type before.

  • If I'm following what you mean by packaged RAM, Apple does that. It's fast, but you can't upgrade it.

  • The next fad will be Thunderdome. Are you ready to go beyond that?

  • No, it won't. The DRAM market is dominated by three companies, and they've colluded before. They get their wrist slapped by some government body, they promise not to do it again, and then they wait a few years and do it again.

  • They can try, but Vance can't unite branches of MAGA around a cult of personality the way Trump does. It'd crumble fast.

I suspect they know that, and it's why they haven't tried already.

  • The history of the field has made important contributions to how modern computing works. Optimizing compilers, multitasking, and virtual machines all directly comes out of work that started with AI. Even if you don't use all of these directly, you benefit from them just by using a computer built after 1980.

If you're interested, I'd recommend Steven Levy's "Hackers", particularly the first two sections that are about MIT CSAIL. The third section is about the Sierra games studio, which has its own historical interest, but not really relevant here (and for various reasons, that part of the book hasn't aged as well, IMO).

I don't like the part of the field that has been weaponized against the working class. Which is almost everything that gets headlines right now. There are still good researchers doing good work who should be praised. They're just not the ones "publishing papers" on Anthropic's web site.

  • They don't even think of New York City as "real America" in the first place. Connecting this to where 9/11 actually happened doesn't occur to them.

  • Miller might even prefer the outcome where the regime falls around him. He's a mediocre man with delusions of adequacy, and he's not at the very top of the pyramid.

There's something that tends to happen to men like that in regimes like this. What generally happens is that they are "given the courtesy" of being allowed to shoot themselves in the head after a major fuckup. Which will happen, because he isn't actually good at anything except yelling at people and acting tough.

The worst the democratic socialists are likely to do to him is a trial and prison time. Even if he's executed, he'll at least get a trial.

  • Truth is that this sort of thing has worked out for them before. Trump would not be in office right now if he wasn't bankrolled by Musk and Thiel. There were reports in early 2024 that the GOP was basically broke.

A few million to a campaign can be converted into billions of tax benefits. Just think of how much they got out of the Trump tax credits from the first term. Pile on top of that cases where they get sweet government contracts (like Palantir). It's all a direct shift of money from the working class and into capitalists with the government as an intermediary.

Which is to say that, yes, it is good investment for them. They can afford to miss a few sometimes. Generally, they play the game to win more than they lose. If you win every time, it's actually an Enron-style red flag.

  • Remember when we made the same mistake with Internet Explorer in the early 2000s? Let's go ahead and learn nothing from that.

  • Hollerith was American-born to German immigrants. The census in question was also the 1890 US census.

It's a cool story. With the rise in population, the 1890 census was not predicted to be completed before they had to start the 1900 census. With Hollerith's machine, it was instead done in record time.

  • You take Mandani's number and subtract the second place winner. That's how it works.
