  • I've been thinking about this too.

I've heard a lot of commentary about how polling has addressed the shortcomings of recent election cycles and that its more or less all fixed now. I do wonder though, there seems to be a heap of things that are very difficult to account for.

For example, who's actually going to vote vs just intending to vote. For example the garbage thing has motivated a lot of people to get it done.

Another is the late break. I think for a lot of people that just don't pay attention to politics, if you ask them 2 weeks ago they just haven't really thought about it - their answers are precooked from last cycle. As the big day comes around and people think about candidates, lots of traditional republicans voters will make a different choice.

Also just generally with polls is the type of person that actually completes polls. Most people ain't got time for that.

Of course I understand pollsters try to control for these things but as these problems stack up its easy to see how there can be some surprises.

  • I think you might be talking about vote fuzzing. This denies bots the ability to check whether they're banned.

Votes shown are inaccurate by a few votes . You can't check whether your vote was recorded by refreshing the page.

  • ... but I found a blog post saying the earth is flat, and it had very thorough citations.

    Bold claims require irrefutable evidence.

The weight of evidence in support of fluoridation is overwhelming. It's the greatest public health intervention in the history of human kind.

If you want to say it makes people docile then you need large double blinded peer reviewed longitudinal studies supporting that claim. If you don't have that then you're going to get downvotes because you're just parroting nonsense.

  • In Australia I often think of conservatives as "temporarily embarrassed millionaires".

Our conservative party obviously favours wealthy people. My parents who are poor will always vote conservative because they "identify as" wealthy.

Is it maybe similar, like some kind of class war?

  • I don't really understand what you're getting at.

People often downvote without posting a comment as explanation.

I've noticed lemmy users do this more than reddit.

The explanation is simply that they don't like the vibe of what you're saying but don't know how to respond.

  • I'm not suggesting that you care about down votes, but you seem to think the down votes imply people are angry or have "lost their minds" whatever that means.

  • Any ideas what might be the best way to observe this shit show unfold if your not in the US?

... other than here I mean.

Edit: for those wondering the time zones are:

Pacific: UTC -8:00 Eastern: UTC -5:00

  • I think I remember reading that the prevalence of fluoride in drinking water is the single greatest medical breakthrough in "population health" of the 20th century or something.

Like a fancy CT scan might help someone who needs a CT scan but fluoride helps everyone mitigate dental problems (and the many and varied related issues) all the time.

I guess in fairness dental hygiene has probably improved a lot since fluoride was put in the water, so if it's less important then any potential side effects might be more concerning.

  • The reason why you're being downvoted is because you've provided some outlandish claims without any source.

I honestly remember my parent's talking about these exact things in the 80s. It's absurd to claim that in the interceding decades no reputable science has supported these claims.

Science is sometimes wrong, and from time to time we have to improve our understanding of things, but great claims require great evidence.

  • Interesting perspective. Looking at her Wikipedia page it doesn't look like there's much support for her kurgan theory.

Feels a bit like ancient aliens for feminists.

  • Great.

She's not reaching any of those people. She's handing out candy to fat kids who think she's amazing

  • I don't think they did know necessarily.

You would just expect a presidential campaign to pay. It's not like Trump pays from his own pocket.

Also, they didn't give Trump a free pass.

  • They could close the bill and still refuse another convention on the same grounds.

  • Yeah she thought it was hilarious and i did too.

Like I said he was a bit of a jerk I think.

  • Well she's pretty much wasted her influence here.

Very few people care enough to read her nuanced opinion, and those people will be democrat voters anyway.

To anyone that needed to hear her message she just said "both sides are shit right now, and everyone's shit is emotional right now".

Elections are lost with complex messaging.

Gretas problem generally is that she looks great to intelligent progressive young activists, but she just makes everyone else feel... chagrined I guess. What I mean is that she's incapable of changing the opinions of the people who need to change their opinions.

  • Wow he really said that.

Guy is falling apart and people are gonna elect him anyway.

  • A lot of people try to say you should only down vote poor quality comments that don't contribute to the discussion.

If every one downvotes opinions they disagree with you just have a homogeneous echo chamber.

Personally, I don't think there's any point complaining about it. You can't hold back that tide.

Honestly I think users on Lemmy are from a very narrow demographic, and to be blunt a lot of users just don't have a very broad life experience. That being the case I think anyone should expect to have some opinions which are unpopular with other lemmy users.
