  • Kelley is artisan, Sumner is a factory manager. Indeed they cannot be using same tools or work on the same floor or within the same building. Blind trust in AI (even with guardrails) is a recipe for disaster. They have jumped to Rust to add more guardrails to their AI lunacy but it won't hold for long. At this point there's no single human who actually knows or understands the code and AI code is proven to have durability issues at scale. So direct rewrite gives a quick boost as code is ported from somewhat reviewed base onto new platform, but as new code gets added this will dissipate. It sounds like Bun issue is systemic Zig Rust or Pixie dust won't fix it.

  • use their cheapest plan, burn their tokens, burn the hole in their budget. could backfire though as then "clever analysts" will claim that demand is up and eager bankers will shell out more cash

  • an unpopular opinion perhaps: out of all Dem presidents on memory Biden did the most in terms of progressive agenda and by extension so did Harris. But that duo never went full-in on progressive values or anything else, really, so they have mainly half-assed it. So I have no compelling reason to believe that they were progressive as much as they are anti-progressive. Her reaching out to Mamdani could be interpreted as a genuine reach out trying to escape typical DNC tether. Fact is her lackluster performance last time does indicate she's a poor "performer" thus a poor choice to win against raging republicanz.

  • both

  • well, results of poor electoral system are finally materializing in full: there are no more votes "for", every vote is "against" and two parties controlling the agenda, getting away with every shit they pull 'cause electorate will vote against the other guy.

  • first party cleansing... more will follow: blacks, asians anyone looking different and once that has been dealt with anyone who deviates one iota from party line... where did we see that? Oh right Nazi, USSR, China... funny thing their biggest scare is "communism" yet they follow the same playbook

  • thank you folks. Your input gives me a decent starting point. I'll start digging based on info/experiences shared, maybe I can find someone locally selling old GPU with enough ram for cheap

  • well, I intend on scavenging for parts as I can't really afford today's prices. And since I don't really know what should I grab as minimum specs I don't even know what to look for. I could try to look for old(er) gaming rigs people sell or maybe there are some business workstations that may be sold in bulk. Either way, knowing what's the minimum viable set of specs for running qwen or claude locally would be helpful

  • I've got some circa 2010 cards laying about with a 32Gb server that already has 8Gb carved out for TrueNAS, so essentially I could squeeze 16-24Gb out of it, but it's an older i5 Intel CPU

  • Selfhosted @lemmy.world

    Hardware for local inference?

  • not "if" but "when" but that is of no concern to CxO's and "market analysts" 😉

  • This is irrelevant as CEO's and shareholders keep screaming "moar AI!". Engineers know limits of the tool but are forced to ignore those. So yes,LLM is comming for your job but not because it can do it,but because it is perceived to be cheaper.

  • yes

  • it actually will take your job... it will crash industries and economies a touch later, when all the knowledge and expertise is lost and we're left with a choice of rolling back a century or keep living within enshitified society. And not because AI is useless, but because suits and wallstreet are casing exponential profits from the snake oil AI outfits are selling.

  • there was labour movement that clawed some freedoms and dignity from savage capitalism. Those gains are eroding fast now. Unchecked, capitalism has no inventive for sharing spoils with labour.

  • is that the same guy claiming that there should be no moderation on Facebook for "true freedom" and who cried his eyes out telling stories of horrible Democracts making him take out deranged individuals off platform? Well...

  • methods of extermination matter. Did you ever try to train an animal? Did you exterminate one for not listening? Do you know anyone who did exterminate animals for bad behaviour and put it on their resume? Do you want to be like them? Ideas and movements do not grow in a vacuum. Uneducated underpaid masses will find the most unpleasant outlet for their anger. Mainstream Democrats will not resolve that issue and those same Democrats will choke off any progressive agenda. So it's a hydra, you cut off one head only to get two staring back at you. Extermination of effect solves absolutely nothing. So, you were saying?

  • VERY dramatic. Maybe even accurate. But does it really matter? System needs to change. Otherwise same people will hijack Dems and you'll have NOTHING to tramp it with having a single party. So yeah, nuance, grasshopper.

  • there's a name for it: "racheting"

  • that kind of verbiage only promotes political division and confrontation. So being precise with what you say does matter. Should dissenting opinions exist? Should there be guardrails AGAINST blatant breaks of law (domestic and international)? Should people be jailed or exterminated for their political views? Who has monopoly on violence? etc. etc. Political demise for republicans would be nice but then take into consideration how very close Mainstream Democrats are to republicans. This is not solved by political extermination of Republicans but by pluralistic government, proportional representation that allows for more nuance and forces compromise... would still need strong and independent judicial branch to hold government to account. Calls for extermination of "other" was always a prerogative of radical extremes, ability to set the framework that prevents any abuse and having a dialogue is what defines "civilized" society

  • raspberrypi @lemmy.ml
