  • I remember bringing up some LGBT stuff to them before. I told them that I initially started questioning religion because it was upsetting to me that my sibling would be sent to hell simply for being gay. Interestingly, they seem to not believe the anti-gay rhetoric of their religion, which is a relief. Trans issues are another matter which does frustrate me a bit...they seem accepting of some trans people in general but have some unfortunate other views on the matter. It is difficult sometimes to reconcile stuff like this though, I agree.

No idea what they think on deportation, but why do you bring up human trafficking? Human trafficking is pretty universally seen by everyone as a bad thing, even Trumpers.

People are individuals and while most of them might lean a certain way, they often have some views that don't fit the stereotypical mold of their demographic if that makes sense. I found out that my friend was vehemetly against bombing Iran despite being a Trumper.

As another example that is likely to yield me downvotes, I would consider myself an incredibly liberal person. And I do sympathize with someone like Luigi. But I am very opposed to weirdly celebrating what he did like most of the internet seems to do. Compassion and understanding? Hell yeah. Celebrating shooting people? Not so much. I never talk about this with others because I know how unpopular of an opinion it is on the internet. But I brought it up to my Trumper friend and she feels the exact same way.

We are all individuals with our own views and you're not necessarily going to stumble across the "perfect match" with anything. Part of human relationships is learning who you can and can't get along with and working through the points that don't mesh as well. I don't know what I'm babbling on about really.

  • Anti-religious atheist here.

You know what...years ago I would have said "no". Imo, often fundamentalist religious people have views that actively harm society through systemic actions. So it's not something I am able to generally sit well with.

However, years back I met someone irl (not online) with absolutely polar opposite political and religious views as me. I am an atheist who actually opposes the concept of religion in general and I am very liberal. This person I know is very Catholic and conservative. They are a hardcore Trumper and I have always seen him as a dangerous threat to the US.

    Yet...

Over the years, this person has legitimately become my absolute best friend. They are the kindest, funniest, most wonderful person I know. I absolutely love spending time with them. We just don't debate our polar opposite viewpoints. We still share and talk about deep, personal things...but we don't instigate political debates or anything like that. I take their views as someone who has been brainwashed by society, and I'm sure they feel the same about me. But it means that I don't see them as evil for their views and am able to easily look past that.

I don't know what the fuck I would do in life if I ever lost them. Sometimes they are the reason why I look forward to the rest of my day.

We are not romantically involved or anything. They have a partner and a family, and I wouldn't be interested with doing that with this person anyway.

But the point is, it taught me that I can have a very deep, personal connection with someone with polar opposite views. Ideally, I would like for a partner to share my views. But life has shown me that it is possible to be opposite like that and still really deeply care for and enjoy someone.

  • As someone who started running last year because it's supposedly "good for you", I'm inclined to agree lol

  • Yeah it's super easy to buy shit quickly online nowadays. Most you'd have to wait is a couple of days without the device you normally use.

My phone spontaneously died several years ago and those few days without a phone were frustrating, but manageable. Got a new one pretty quickly.

  • Or suffer my cuuuuurse

  • Everyone here is recommending a cat. I have almost zero experience with them, but have experience with dogs instead. I live alone tho so I don't think a dog would be conducive to my lifestyle. I've been playing around with the idea of getting a cat and stumbling across this thread isn't helping me not think about it lol!!

I'm debating googling around right now to see if there's a place like a shelter or something where I can view some cats lol.

  • I flinch at that and I don't like hugs but I've actually never been abused lol I'm just a weirdo I guess!

  • Yeah...I've always found it odd how internet dwellers seem to completely ignore the mentall illness and drug issues that cause and exacerbate much of homelessness.

That's not to say we shouldn't be compassionate, but the issue is a hell of a lot more complex than just giving them a house and nothing else.

  • I just turned off and uninstalled One Drive when I got Windows 11 and have had zero issues

  • Any time I see Dr. Oz, I immediately disregard anything as snake oil. The man is a terrible human being...preying on the desperate so he can line his pockets with more cash. He was already a very successful surgeon making boatloads of money. How much of a greedy asshole can you be to then start lying to people to get more when you're already rich?

  • I saw in a patient's chart recently that they were unable to perform a breast biopsy because her breasts were too small. I was like goddamn.

  • I feel like I can pull out of the parking space quicker and easier if the nose of my car is facing towards the street.

Also, and this sounds silly so please don't judge too hard lol...

I got a new car recently. My old car had front parking sensors that would beep in increasing frequency the closer you are to an item. My new car does not have front parking sensors. My new car has both a backup cam and rear parking sensors. So it is sometimes easier to back into a space.

However, I mostly only back in at my home parking space and in this one parking garage I go to with very narrow spaces. I get nervous in public when someone is waiting for me to back in so I don't do it super often in public.

  • I'm assuming since you're older now, you're out of that environment, yeah? It's one silver lining in things I guess. If your teddy bear were sentient I'm sure it would have hugged you back and told you everything was gonna be ok.

Honestly, for me it's a bit weird. I've actually forgotten a lot of the specifics of my childhood. I know my dad would do it, but I don't really remember any specific moments in time or what my responses were. Memory is a weird thing like that. I guess because it was so long ago or something. Dunno.

  • Aww I'm sorry that both of your parents were like that. Luckily my mom is a very sweet person.

And hey! I'm a fellow computer dork too! I'm nowhere near the level of knowledge of many Lemmy users, but I've always been a casual tech/gadget fan since I was a kid. But somehow I never fully built my own PC until just the other day. Was actually a pretty simple process and things today are so much better at plug and play as opposed to long ago. Hope you're still enjoying being a tech nerd haha!

  • Humans are messed up in general so it's probably common enough tbh. My childhood was a bit different though. The arguing was never mutual. It was always my dad screaming at my mom while she sits there and takes it. I remember realizing that was abnormal by watching media growing up... realizing that couples are supposed to love each other and that fights are generally a mutual experience, not just one person belittling the other.

Anyway sorry that was oversharing lol

  • As a socially anxious person, I absolutely love self checkout. Unless I have like a zillion items, then I use regular checkout.

  • I have the opposite problem. My dyer has the fucking loudest, longest, incessant cycle done noise I've ever heard from a dryer.

It buzzes at defcon 1 levels for I swear at LEAST 5 whole seconds (you count out 5 whole "Mississippis" of a fire alarm level noise and realize how long that is). And the kicker is that it does it not once, not twice, but at least three separate times. First, it repeatedly wars you that the cycle will end soon. Then it does one final triumphant wail when the cycle ends...as if you don't take the laundry out instantaneously that a bomb is going to go off or something.

I absolutely cannot fucking stand this. I don't even understand why it does this either. To me, washers should have end of cycle signals, not dryers. I've accidentally left wet clothes in the washer overnight and woken up to a horrible smell and had to rewash them. But when I leave clean clothes in the dryer? Literally zero issues occurs.

One day I'm going to figure out how to open up the damn thing and smash the buzzer.

  • What the fuck even is this? Does anyone have a source because I am horrified and entertained

  • It's because mortality is absolutely fucking terrifying. Anyone who says otherwise, be they atheist or religious or what, is just using some heavy copium/denial to try to deal with that shit.

Cue the inevitable response I get from this about insane people claiming that they are happy that life has an end point and that they will be happy that they will cease to ever exist again so some mold can be fed or some random bullshit.
