  • Certain employer-sponsored visas have requirements that the job be posted for a period of time to see if any US applicants apply. This is supposed to make sure the foreign worker isn't "taking a job away" from a similarly qualified American.

    Companies do prefer to hire foreign nationals for these jobs, though, because they typically take less pay, and their US work authorization is tied to their employment, so that makes it much harder for them to change jobs in the US without leaving the country first. So while they are supposed to "post the job" for Americans to apply, they will do the bare minimum to post it, and make sure the requirements are written so that no one other than a foreign worker would bother applying.

    It's rather telling that amid all this controversy over the "DNC Autopsy", the key point which the DNC seems to be ignoring is the fact that the political consultants that ran it were all well off, and didn't see the same day-to-day pain that most people did. There is a reason why the term K-shaped economy is so popular.

    And yes, Trump won and he has made things so much worse. But was hard in 2024 to vote for "more of the same" when your situation has gotten worse.

    We know that this didn't come out of a vacuum, this capability has been there and was only recently released to the public. We also know that this Administration is in very close with all the tech bros enshittifying everything, and they like to lie, especially about history.

    So, now we know what the October Surprise before this election is going to be: the Administration is going to use fake satellite imagery to rile everyone up. We'll be lucky if they don't drop some nukes in the process....

  • It's all party politics, and favors going back and forth. Right now, for better or worse, there is no bigger symbol of the Democratic Establishment than Chuck Schumer. He may owe enough favors to other Establishment people that he has to back the Next One Up.

  • Schumer himself hasn't said whether he will run for re-election in 2028, so the deal might be to get Chuck to finally retire already and then AOC can be the only candidate.....

    And, AOC wouldnt run for President and Senate at the same time. I think NY allows that, but most candidates who try and pull that off are incumbent Senators or Congresspeople who are running for the same job while also running for President. It would be very unusual to run for a Senate job for the first time that you might have to give up 20 days into your term.

  • I still think there's already been a deal made to clear the field for AOC to take over Chuck's seat in exchange for her to help clear the field for Gavin (because he is the Next One Up....).

    They just all have to pretend that the deal isnt a thing, because no deal is official until it happens, and everyone wants to keep their options open in case it falls apart.
