  • join-lemmy needs to have a better interactive flow to select a server. What they have is difficult and slow to maintain and doesn't take into account server stability or newness (new servers are more likely to stop working once the admin discovers they don't like hosting, or they have a terrible mod experience). But the lemmy devs are not interested in either doing things like allowing servers to tag themselves, nor utilize sites like the fediseer which already does that. So we end up with a bad "join" frontpage which people like you end up just avoiding which goes to show how bad things are.

There used to be a very nice interactive lemmy server selection site at one point which guided you based on interest/subinterest as self-tagged in fediseer, but I can't remember the domain anymore :(

  • Honestly, there needs to be a setting for lemmy admins to specify the default comms displayed to not-logged and new users. Just the firehose of the /all or local is not particularly attractive to most people.

EDIT: Went ahead and opened a feature request

  • because Trump and Bibi said they didn't talk about delaying it

Oh well, if the two known liars said so...

  • I will argue that so was the Israel cease-fire "strong-man" act. In fact my conspiracy theory is that Israel explicitly delayed the cease-fire so that Trump could look strong by finishing it, then whined a bit in the newspapers to sell it. This is not even the first time they GOP has done this, as per the Iran hostages affair.

  • HB tend to be vary campist and do tend to rely on bad faith and hypocrisy a lot, but I don't have them as act as direct liars.

  • I was clearly joking! all good!

  • Look, there's no reason to disbelieve here. If they claim to be trans, and they try to have trans-friendly policies, and keep talking about trans issues, why go this route?

Is your greater point that they're pretending to be mostly trans as a way to use their trans-identity as a shield for criticism? If so, criticize that when they do it. The counter-argument to "you can't criticize me because I'm trans" shouldn't be "you're not trans", it should be "being trans is not a defense". Ya follow?

And if the argument is that hexbear want to appear more trans in order to "virtual signal", then I'd say there's plenty to criticize about the way they run their instance, we don't need to try and deny anything good they do.

  • We disagreed on copyright?! That's a ben, landlubber!

  • That's the beauty of the fediverse. It cannot be bought anymore than someone can buy "the internet".

  • Reply to other software it check reply federation, as that's often broken. Hello from lemmy.dbzer0.com

  • I am not defederated from hexbear or lemmy.ml and I don't even see that many tankies. They stick to their comms usually and those that venture out usually know to behave. Every social media site is "hostile to many users". Show me one that isn't.

  • We already had p2p reddit. It was called Aether. It failed due to lack of users.

  • The things is, there's plenty of people who are willing to open their wallet for their services, they just prefer paying corporations, instead of donating to FOSS.

  • Lol, I run multiple FOSS services online, two of which have thousands of MAUs. I consider myself lucky to be even covering the hardware costs at this point. I would love to even make an extra 500 Eur per month for myself given the amount of time I spend doing sysadmin, automation, PR, development and just being an active part of the communities.

We really need to change in what people consider valuable and how little actually is needed to help. Like literally, all you need to do is spare 1$ per month on your social media that is your primary home. If every user did that, all those service providers would have so much support.

  • The ongoing prostration to Trump continues...

  • The point of it being a rigged game, is that those would win by default either way. We were fucked so long as people are expecting parliamentary democracy to fix systemic issues and do nothing else to directly improve their situations.

We don't have to all agree on how to fix things, we just have to do direct action to fix things for ourselves and those close to us, and it incidentally tends to fix the system as well.

Nihilistic apathy just leads to more suffering but it's incidentally exactly what the system expects of you, which is why parliamentarism is set up the way it is.

  • That's just nihilist defeatism. There's always something we can do, and it doesn't have to be super radical either. It just takes a lot of people not playing the rigged game.

  • why not use Qiqe as a workaround?

  • Yeah it's not a binary choice. We don't have to accept either stagnation (i.e. slow cooking towards fascism) or fascism speedrun.
