  • Even before AI was a big thing, I really wish we had some kind of class, or at least an explanation from our teachers on the basics of how learning works. So much unnecessary drama could have been avoided if the kids had a better understanding of why their teachers were asking them to do things this way instead of just saying "do it this way because if not I'll give you a bad grade." Obviously younger kids aren't going to be equipped to handle all the neuroscience, but I'm sure there is some simplified explanation that could be given that would get the point across.

    This was an extreme example of this, but it was emblematic of the general way my teachers handled students who didn't understand the point of the assignments or teaching methods: I forget which grade I was in, but in one of my math classes there was a day in class where I was solving the problems but not doing it exactly the way the teacher was teaching it. When he insisted, I asked why I had to do it that way if it works either way. He said something like "Because I have the big desk." Basically just an appeal to authority without any further explanation. "You're a dumb kid and I'm an adult, so do what I say."

  • I do see plenty of disagreements, especially in the political sphere. While people seem to generally lean left, there is a decent amount of variation in opinions within that space. Although since they all still generally align with the same goals, the disagreements only get so heated.

    For things like media (games, movies, etc) I see less, but for me I just don't really feel the need to rain on anyone's parade. If they like something I don't like, whatever. I wouldn't be shocked if a lot of people felt the same way.

    For tech stuff... we're on a decentralized open source platform and a lot of the users came over from corporate social media. Of course most of us are skeptical of big tech developments. Occasionally some nuance gets lost, but I even see some of that show up. There are plenty of threads where the OP posts something based on a misunderstanding and the top comment is someone who (probably) knows more about the topic and can clarify things.

    Also like some others have said, a non-trivial amount of the arguing that happens on other sites is likely egged on by astroturfing and prioritized by algorithms designed to keep attention rather than promote healthy discussion.

    Also, there are some topics where the disagreements I have at least just don't feel relevant enough to post. For example, with the AI thing. I generally agree with the sentiment of opposing the current AI implementations being pushed by big tech. The environmental impact makes it a non-starter even if the rest of it was good, but then there are issues with privacy, companies using AIs that aren't good enough to accomplish the task to replace workers just to save some money regardless of the consequences, and the involvement these companies have with the MIC, etc.

    However, I do have some optimism for uses of AI in the future. I think it's cool tech that has potential to do good things, it's just that a) It's not actually ready yet and b) Some of those things would only work if we lived in a fairer society. But... honestly what's the point of interjecting this into a discussion about what's CURRENTLY going on with AI? What does my hypothetical sci-fi automated luxury gay space communism have have to do with a thread about companies spying on us or switching workers for AI and hurting both the workers and the consumers? Nothing really. It's only really relevant for a discussion about academic research on AI. So I don't bring it up. Not because I feel I need to silence my dissent, but because I recognize that it doesn't really serve any purpose in this context beyond potentially derailing the discussion.

    So overall, I'm not worried. While it would be nice to have some more people on the fediverse, I'm fine with the disagreements we do see and I don't need to argue both sides with a Nazi or a bot. As long as mods don't get too heavy handed about unreasonable stuff, it's fine.

  • We can all lie and give some cultural sites that you should totally go see but... food. All my real suggestions are food related. If you're not from the immediate surrounding area, you absolutely have to get at least one slice of cheap pizza. Not from a fancy tourist place. Just literally find some random thing on a corner selling it for like a dollar or two and you will have the best pizza you will have had in your life (again if you live outside of the NY metro area).

    After that, look to see if there are any street food festivals happening. Might be some interesting stuff.

    There are quite a few touristy restaurants in the middle of the city that are going to be expensive and crowded, but they can still be fun to go to once if you don't mind the cost and can get a reservation.

    For actual activity suggestions... highly dependent on what you like. Museums? Parks? Shows? They're all there, it just depends on what you want. I guess one recommendation in that regard is that if you want to see a broadway show and are willing to be flexible, there is a ticket counter in Time Square that you can go to day of to get discounted tickets for a show that day.

  • Not Christian, so take it with a grain of salt, these are just my observations:

    These are people who thought that public schools not actively supporting their religion was the same thing as religious persecution. If "woke" stuff represents their shrinking influence over public life, then a government being "anti-woke" lets them go back to asserting themselves over others, or at least not having their views challenged. So even if the leading guy isn't a moral paragon of their religion, the fact that he's giving them permission to go back to their old ways is probably good enough.

    Also, not really relevant, but the last bit about the Pope is funny to me. Most American Christians are Protestant. Evangelicals specifically are Protestants. While it probably isn't a big deal anymore, tensions between WASPs and the more recent Catholic immigrants from Italy and Ireland were a feature of early to mid 20th century politics. It was actually a pretty big deal when JFK was elected because he was Catholic. So I really doubt Evangelicals care much about the Pope other than when he happens to agree with them.

  • He's an example of a trope I'm not found of. I don't know if there's already a name for it, but it's the trope of the villain turned hero at the last minute but dies by the end so that the story can give them both redemption and punishment without having to have our heroes deal with the messy matter of bringing them to justice when the story ends. It's romantic to see the villain have a change of heart and do the right thing in the end. Less so watching them get taken away in handcuffs for their crimes after the fact because one good deed doesn't erase what they did.

  • The problem is that most of our problems aren't really science problems. Or at least the thing holding them up isn't the lack of practical applied scientists. They're political ones. We've known what we needed to do about climate change for decades but their are capitalists who stand to lose from doing anything about it, so we don't. We have plenty of housing, it's just being hoarded by people who do nothing with it but extract free money from people who are desperate to have a place to live. We have amazing medicine, but corporations are able to abuse IP laws to price gouge people who need it to live.

    A scientist or engineer could come up with some amazing sci-fi tech that has the potential to save us and capitalists would find some way to make it bleed us dry.

  • My understanding of the refund system is that the 2hr/2 week rule is just for automatic no questions asked refunds. I think if the game turns out to be broken in some way you can still get it, you might just have to submit again.

    That said, agree for just seeing if you like the game. The 2hr limit is kind of stressful. For any game with a slow start my willingness to give it a chance is pretty low.

  • For me Doctor Who is a fun campy show. It’s got some heart that serves as it’s basic message and occasionally more directly deals with contemporary politics, but it’s so silly that it’s hard to take that seriously most of the time.
