I think I speak for most people when I say that I’m a good representative of the general population.

  • I didn't get it until I read the transcript. I thought that the second panel was a jab with barbed wire (tetanus risk) and that the joke was basically "if your body is punctured, be sure to treat it by puncturing your body".

I actually think I find that reading more fun than the intended one.

  • A class of students doing that would be a million times more fun for the professors too. Acadamia would be so much better if education were its primary purpose.

  • That was my niche in grad school. I authored a paper proving that the CW-complexes in the category of small categories under the Joyal-Tierney model structure are exactly the groupoids. I never came up with a reason why anyone should care, but at least it was fun.

  • Way back I gave one of my cats one of those toys that's basically a torus with a ball that rolls around the inside with openings on top to allow the cat to hit the ball around. The openings were just a hint too small for the ball to come out without any force. Anyway, I gave my girl this toy and I swear she spent over half an hour just knocking that ball around. I walked up and pulled the ball out and showed it to her and in an instant her eyes went from slits to fully dilated. She didn't attack me though, she just yelled at me instead.

  • I had a cat who had this issue as well as bad gas when we got him. I swear we did like ten stool samples and they all came up no parasites. At one point he ate some bristles off a broom and coughed them up with a yellow worm thing wrapped around. The vet prescribed parasite meds and he was cured immediately.

For the record, if that happens the correct thing to do is to put it in water in a baggie and bring it in to the vet, rather than taking a photo and immediately trying to get it as far away from you as humanly possible, which seemed like the sensible thing to do at the time.

  • I know it's an engineering meme so presumably has more comedic value to engineers, but encabulation might be the funniest discovery I've come across in the past few years because it flawlessly emulates that feeling of hitting the three-minute mark of a topology seminar and it's already "well I guess I'll just sit here and stare".

The Chrysler video is my favorite, especially the service tech in the second half after the engineer finishes explaining how the turbo encabulator works.

Using the Geiger scale on the DRB-2, measure the Renchin output of the capacitive reactance fluxmuster. If it is above ten RGs, replace the unit. If it is below ten RGs, you will be directed to perform a series of tests that will effectively raise the billable hours for the service department, but will perform no other useful function.

  • This is great stuff.

  • This does work for some people, but my experience was that having my livelihood depend on my passion completely killed my passion.

  • Instead, billionaires are surrounded by people who they can't trust. Sycophants everywhere, who don't care about who you are as a person, but what you can do for them. You're less likely to have people calling you out for things, but you also won't get much affirmation for the genuinely good things about your personality.

This is a really good observation and makes perfect sense when you say it out loud.

  • There should be an AI helper to pet and play with my cat, that way all I need to do is buy food and pay vet bills and clean the litter.

  • I do play some video games and I guess this is nice, but what I really enjoy is listening to music. When am I gonna get an AI helper to listen to songs for me so I can get that done in peaceful silence instead?

  • I always found it overwhelming to get started on big messes, so cleaning everything up immediately would get around my executive dysfunction. When I got in a relationship with someone whose approach was to be a human hurricane and then deep clean every once in a while it was a culture shock and it took years of me being a bad partner to become more responsible. I didn't really understand the executive dysfunction so I self-loathed over it.

  • It's gotta be my favorite webcomic.

  • I'm on the far left.

  • Never wash produce with detergent or bleach

Why did no one tell me this earlier?

  • If you put a bandage over the big hole in your chest you can get a good drumming sound out of it.

  • My favorite cat was named Buddy, but since he would get into a lot of mischief we would often refer to him as "the monster". Once you start calling your cat Buddy Monster, you'll find you're now a very short distance from Monster of Buddies I'm pulling your strings.
