  • You only need a Peertube account – and the app, if required – if you’re a content creator and want to upload your own videos. You can watch videos without needing any account at all, either in your browser or on your mobile using an app, such as the Peertube app or NewPipe. SepiaSearch offers a comprehensive video search (covering a large number of selected instances).

    If you want to subscribe to channels, watch, share or comment on videos in the Fediverse, you can do so from your Fediverse account, i.e. from Friendica, Mastodon, Sharkey, etc. You can also subscribe to Peertube channels and watch videos using your Lemmy account. I’m not sure, though, if all the features are available with Lemmy.

  • If you select ‘Forum Discussions’ under ‘What type of content do you want to see or share?’, NodeBB, Lemmy, mbin, Piefed and Lotide are then recommended. That fits well.

    But if you select ‘Social Media Post + ’Forum Discussions", Mastodon, Misskey and other microblogging services are recommended, as well as Lemmy. But not mbin, which actually offers exactly this combination, and also not Friendica, which can do micro-/macroblogging, but also offers forums/groups and federates best with both directions.

    So it's perhaps a little under-complex, but nicely done and a good new contact point for interested people.

    I think Misskey and its forks are among the Fediverse services that are not modelled on a specific commercial platform, but have created something completely their own.

    The forks differ in details (see comparison), but the user experience is relatively similar.

  • Open Library is the main data source for Bookwyrm for book data. Bookwyrm is an application in the Fediverse that can be used to find and write reviews of books. I wouldn't see that as a contradiction.

  • Yes, Lemmy accounts can only follow/subscribe to groups (besides Lemmy also mbin, piefed + also Peertube), but not individual accounts. A Lemmy account can only communicate with individual accounts if they write something in a community. That is one of the aims of mbin, to connect them: The structure of communities /magazines + a microblog feed.

  • Yes, you can do this from almost anywhere in the Fediverse. As Mastodon does not recognise headings, the first paragraph becomes the heading. This means that it looks better on Lemmy if you put the community tag at the end of the post and start with a content-related introduction.

    Do I understand correctly that you have to pay 29.99 just to get an account on their "flagship instance"? or how is it to be understood?
