  • If you're fine with the risk of a possible ecological disaster, then kill them all off. But remember, killing all the wolves was also thought to be a great idea at one time. Fortunately, we weren't able to achieve that goal before discovering we were wrong. Such decisions are final and can't be undone if they go wrong.

    The hubris is in the idea, that with such a long human track record of being wrong about such things, is executing a such total and final idea is the right thing to do. But go ahead and do it. I'll be safely dead when the error might be discovered.

  • It's a nice thought, but it has so many modifiers it's pretty much worthless. Everything from road conditions, to time of day or night, to the size and weight and type of vehicle you are driving, to how old you are affects stopping distance and the interval you should be leaving.

    Remember children - Driving should never be "relaxing." It's real work and demands your total concentration to protect yourself and everyone around you. So put the phone down and even turn off the radio. Put your head on a swivel like a fighter pilot. And have an escape plan for every inch you drive.

  • Yes I know. And maybe those studies are fully correct. I certainly have no way to cross check them. So you and I must take them at face value.

    But even science will tell you that you should have at least some skepticism of such studies. Because it always seems like we miss some tiny important detail that only reveals it's self later as we refine our knowledge on a subject.

  • The issue isn't "I don't want to be cold." The problem is when it's below 20F/-7C, you need to wait long enough for the coolant to warm enough to evaporate the moisture in the defrost vents and the inside of the windshield. Otherwise the inside of the windshield frosts over and you can't see well enough to drive safely. And the colder it gets, the longer it takes.

    Do you need remote start? Nope. I don't have it on my vehicles. But you will need to wait long enough to keep the windshield defrosted.

  • As a retired toolmaker, I see your trebuchet and raise you the artillery piece I made for myself - a small Coehorn mortar of about 50mm/2" bore.

    I've known 2 toolmakers that have built their own full scale full functional Gatling guns from scratch also.

  • Yeah, the YTers I follow all are now using internally sourced ads where they get the money. While I will never use or want Hello Fresh or Manscape, I at least know the monies paid for those placements are going directly to the YTer I'm watching.

    The downsides is that you need to be a fairly popular YTer to get such funds. Which is creating a high bar for new creators to start up.

  • The issue is the complexity of the bespoke design of drive trains. It's nigh on impossible to design a "one size fits all" or even "fits a majority" of solutions for a conversion kit that isn't stupidly expensive.

  • Japan still has a higher density of population and far less landmass to cover. My nearest neighbor is over a mile away. Are you going to build a bus route or light rail just for me? Or through county, state, and federal forest lands? Logistics is a bitch.

  • Yep. I live the same life in a very rural and somewhat remote area also. Population density is very low making modern conveniences non-existent and not ever likely to exist in such places.

    Other things to consider: Kids often ride a school bus for an hour or more to and from school. Nearest hospital is 40 miles away. And it's a Level 3. This means it's pretty much a bandaid station. I used to work as a medic up here. The number of times I had to literally turn the lights on in the ER and wait for the doctor to get out of bed and drive to the hospital would shock you. Nearest ambulance is 20 miles away and you better hope they aren't already busy when you dial 911. Because if they are, it could be several hours before they can get to you. The US Postal Service will NOT deliver mail to my home. I need to pay $160 a year for a post office box, (no free delivery for me!), and drive the 12 mile round trip to town, (Pop: 150), just to get my mail.

  • So how does rail solve the Last Mile problem? It does no good to say "take the train" if the nearest train station is 60 miles away. And is it the best use of a train to run tracks to a town/village with a population 150 people or less?
