  • No. The software is deeply embedded and locked down tight. There is no reliable means of interfacing with it beyond what is exposed in the touchscreen interface. Only BMW dealers using their proprietary software can do anything and even they are limited to what is exposed to them. This is the same with all modern cars. Sorry.

  • Accutane will indeed do it, but it's kind of heavy-duty. There are less powerful antibiotics you might want to try first with fewer side effects.

    But yeah, you can dick around with soaps, "don't touch your face" (yeah, right that's some judgy bullshit) and other stuff that implies that the individual is somehow dirty, has poor hygene, has poor diet or other habits but in the end, it's bacterial.

    Never feel bad about going to the doctor to get real medical interventions. If tea tree oil and other bullshit actually worked, it would be a lot more expensive.

  • If you have the mobile app installed, it's running GPS in the background anway. High accuracy mode just ups the frequency of checkin to your liking. Besides, you only need to have it on for a minute or so to determine vector. You probably already have it, but if there is any question, going high accuracy for a moment will answer it.

    I don't find that high accuracy does much to battery life as long as you're smart with it. There are may ways to configure it so it won't eat your battery.

  • I use home assistant and have a dashboard button that triggers an automation.

    Using the notification action, I turn off do-not-disturb, turn off Bluetooth (so it doesn't pipe sound to earbuds or remote audio), set notification mode to on (not vibrate) and set the notification volume to max. I used to loop the default notification sound, but then switched so that the notification uses a new channel entirely and set each phone with a song so it will play for a while. You can silence it with the volume key.

    Took a little tinkering to get it right, but works really well.

  • I'm not defending boomers in any way, but I see the same thing with younger people; that is the allergic reaction to learning about technology. I work in technology, so that's is my sole perspective. I would wager that plenty of young people are allergic to learning about ANYTHING, I just see the tech part.

    I don't expect people outside of my vocation to be experts, but I can't imagine wanting to be utterly confused by the world at large--the world in which technology is literally everywhere. What would one's life be like if you had no clue how any of it worked? You just live in some sort of magical world where digital pixies do everything for you? You're not at all curious how it works? What about when it goes wrong? You just stand there and softly weep in a puddle of your own piss until someone rescues you?

    I feel this way about cars too. I don't expect everyone to be a mechanic, but people will drive around with THE most horrible sounds coming out of their car and they're like "yeah, it started doing that a while back". Zero interest in perhaps having someone look at it or concern that it may turn into a bigger or more expensive problem in the future? A problem that they will have to pay for personally?

    The entire life approach of being absolutely rigid to change or new information is such a puzzle to me. Life is hard enough, and these people just want to make it harder all because they're scared that they may have to put a little brainpower into learning something on their own?

  • I used to do something like that. Instead of talking to them, I would just lean over and belch the word "HELLO!" real loud at them. They would often run away crying, but I felt like there was real value in our interaction.

  • No. I think people are more fearful now thanks to too much news. The world changes very slowly.

    I chat with strangers all the time. Airport, work, grocery store, wherever. I have never had anyone do anything more than have a very short conversation signaling that they weren't interested. Polite but clear, so I don't persist.

    Nobody has ever said anything rude to me or been shitty.

    Humans are social animals, even those self-proclaimed introverts. Everyone need social time, even if it is only with a small group for a short duration. Most people enjoy it, don't believe the bs that society at large is crumbling and people are mean.

    Fwiw, am a guy, short, not horrible looking but not special. I am good at making stupid jokes for most any situation. That seems to put people at ease.

  • I keep hearing that 1 watt lasers will indeed damage a camera. Destroy, not sure. They are available from many online retailers or just go to any large city and buy them at dodgy vape stores.

    A 1 watt laser WILL fuck your eyes. Be smart.

    Also, green lasers are very visible and will attract attention. Ultraviolet lasers are not.visible by humans. Just saying.

  • I used to use Rhapsody until it turned in to Napster, then bought out by crypto bros who broke it, then just fucking gave up.

    If there's a better alternative beyond going back to pirating, I'd love to know.

    I'm more than happy to spend my money on a quality service but beyond a few niche players with limited catalogs, there aren't lot of good alternatives. Qobuz and Tidal are nice, but when they have 20% of the catalog of Spotify, it's not very useful.
