    The level of debauchery is a goddamn delight.

  • Try repairing any modern car. Try repairing a six year old car. Without the proprietary software to interface with the car computers, there aren't a lot.of repairs you can do on your own.

    I have a 19 Volvo and a 13 Volvo. You can't do much of anything to either without the software and a cryptographic PIN that locks the central electronics module. The only way you can access the cem is buy "renting" Volvo software. Even then, they charge for individual transactions. Want to make a key for your car? Pay for the software then pay another $250 for access to the key making module. BTW, that only permits you to make ONE key.

    You've been locked out of your own cars for a long time now. More and more goes behind the dealer paywall over time.

  • Got to experience it in San Francisco one year for a Chinese new year parade. It really is scary, you are utterly helpless and nobody can do anything. Panic at scale is scary.

    There was a medium sized tree that I braced my arms against and held myself away, wife between tree and I. Stood there holding myself out for a while but I was getting tired and wasn't going to last a lot longer. Thankfully crowd broke and it stopped.

    I still hate San Francisco, always some stupid shit happen every time I went. Fuck that city.

  • You just got to play lightning rod.

    People think lightning rods are meant to attract lightning, but that is incorrect. Buildings are often covered with a whole bunch of little 1 foot copper spikes. The idea is a multipoint spray of electrons from the ground up to a charged cloud to balance the charge and reduce the chance of a strike.

    During a storm, you can sometimes hear them making a hissing sound as they work.

    When lightning is about to strike, anything kind of tall and conductive will do the same. If you feel that static charge building up on you, get your ass as flat as you can. You cannot predict where the strike is going to hit, so running is silly--you might well run toward a strike. Just lay flat and stay away from tall stuff. Don't be the tallest thing either.

    A VPN is only really good for plausable deniability. That is there is no direct correlation between the activity coming from an ISP's IP address that is directly connected to your billing profile, home address, etc.

    There are countless ways your identity can be gleaned from your digital exhaust. Fingerprinting just takes maybe four or five attributes your browser will hand over and from there, you can be reasonably identified with a high level of certainty.

    For example, you might be using a Safari browser, your resolution is known (browser spills the beans to render pages), operating system, details about how your device performs a TLS (encryption) handshake, timing, any browser add-ons you might use etc.

    See for yourself: https://demo.fingerprint.com/playground; there are countless pages that show you the same, this is just one.

    If you think that a VPN is going to act as some sort of anonymizer, I'm afraid you've been misled. Even the act of setting up a machine/browser to be properly anonymous will generate signals which will make you stick out like a sore thumb.

    VPNs are one small slice of the pie, they help but they don't solve the problem of being identified online. If you're going to do something that you REALLY don't want anyone to see, you're going to have to spend a lot of time learning--which is a signal also.

    I had a cat that hurt his tail and it had to be amputated. I believe the tail is the anntenna back to the mothership and since he didn't have one anymore, he was no longer an agent. he did whatever he wanted. he was a WEIRD cat.

    Also adopted a different cat that did not have a tail. Never had one when I got him. He was also a deeply weird cat.

    Once they lose the connection, they seem to self-actualize and from what I've seen they all want to do strange things.

  • Where I live, it was not voted on. They just showed up one day. They did have a city council meeting to discuss it, but they had it during 4th of july week--when most people in this small town are on vacation. I don't think that was an accident.

    Had a cat, adopted as a kitten. She was well cared for at all points, socialized, well fed, vet visits, all the stuff you're supposed to do. Lots of playtime, toys, petting, etc. I have always had a cat through my life, I know how to take care of them. She pissed wherever she wanted, constantly. Back to vet, nothing wrong, she's just a cunt. Pills, feliway, whatever, pissed on my wife's coat, the walls, plants, pretty much would only shit in the litter box. Cleaned it daily, tried different types, different litter, etc. Wife had knee/ankle surgery for a cartilage transplant. The night we get home, she's sick, puking, in pain, was clearly discharged too early. That's the night the cat pissed all over the pillows and bed. Wife had to sleep on sofa, I slept on floor. Had to throw away pillows and an expensive down comforter that would not come clean. Also the coat.

    Got rid of that cat the next day. Fuck that cat. You can say stupid shit like "you should have tried xyz!!!". You try living in a catpiss soaked hell and then see how much sympathy you have for a fucker like that thing.

  • When it was created, this was true. However, now cars have systems that log just about everything you do and send it to the manufacturer, who then sells it on to insurance, ICE, anyone with money.

    So it started off ok, but now I would imagine that if your car has a sensor, it is reporting data back to that central telemetry unit which is sending it up up and away.

  • Two hours ago, I was driving in my little town. Speed limit is about 35. At the edge of town is one of those giant freeway-style lighted signboards that flashes some info about upcoming construction starting soon. When you see them on the freeway, they don't look as big. When you're up close to one, you realize they're pretty freaking big.

    Anyway, the signboard is now on it's back, all fucked up, twisted and broken. Looks like a dinosaur picked it up, bit it and threw it. A little farther up the road is a late model kia sedan with the front torn off and some fucking twat of a driver taking pictures of his car.

    So I don't know what model he was in, but it was one of the larger sedans, so not an Elantra or something cheap. I know darn well that it at least had to have automatic emergency braking, maybe even some other driver aids. Somehow, this muppet was able to NOT see the giant lit up, bright orange signboard and his car did nothing to stop anything by the looks of it.

    So it doesn't surprise me that people turn this shit off, not one tiny bit. It's always the people who need to have them on the most, as usual.

  • While you are right, there are almost no laws in the US that protect privacy. Short of being in your own home with the blinds down, there is next to nothing working in your favor. The assumption is that you're in "public" or clear view of the public, thusly, screw you.

    Your pool? Clear view from the road. That douchenozzle with a drone, probably not breaking the law when he takes a video flying over. "Oh, I was looking at my own roof" or some bullshit.

    There should be privacy laws. The world has changed so much, but most laws are stuck in the stone age and now sold to the highest bidder who actively monetizes the complete lack of privacy laws.

    In the US, you can look up TONS of details about anyone's house. From the sale price, the tax history, tons of details about it and even photos of the inside. In what normal world does that make sense?! Your employer sells your salary data to ADP who then sells it to any number of others. What the actual fuck?! Nobody asked for this, it's opt-out only but the opt out expires. I did it a few years ago, and it's back on again.

    If privacy were not important, then there should not be bathroom doors.
