  • The right wants this. You are hopelessly deluded if you think they will lift a finger to prevent it. Double if they have to work with the libs they despise.

  • This is getting out of hand. Now there are two five of them!

  • Used to agree to this, until it turned out that SMS basically doesn't work in rural areas.. Theoretically you can get a voice call with the code, but I've personally ran into instances where the 2FA voice call simply doesn't work on landlines. If we're going to do 2FA, it has to be something so universal anyone can do it. So far, I don't think we've achieved that. I think people have a right to access banking services, etc, and if 2FA doesn't work for them, we're deciding to ban them from using those services. Doesn't sit right with me.

  • That sounds like a 'them' problem. Veganism is based.

  • Well you're cranky, aintcha.

  • Looks like books are back on the menu, boys.

  • ITT: people really upset at being called 'vegan' for some reason.

  • I mean, would you not want to do this specifically to see its effects on marginalized groups? That seems like a pretty good reason to me.

  • Yes. We do this literally every day. We pay taxes on what we earn to support those less fortunate. We share with food with coworkers and tools with neighbors. We have EMTs, firemen, and SAR who wilfully run into danger to help people they've never met. It's literally the foundation of society.

  • You're right, they wouldn't screech about immigrants, they'd screech about Non-Citizens. Who all happen to be a certain skin color or ethnicity for some reason. Remember that some official has to sign off on your Citizenry Service. Guess who is going to be judged more harshly?

And residents have every right and protection as a citizen

History is extremely plain. If a group does not have concrete representation in the political process, their rights are trampled - or at best overlooked. Residents would extremely quickly NOT have the same rights. What about this is hard to understand?

Look, bud, what you're talking about is literally the goal of facism. Don't score an own goal for them, yah?

  • Yah, I mean a disaster agency running death camps was always farfetched. OTOH we have clear precedent of the US gov running death camps vis-a-vis the Native American reservations, Japanese-American concentration camps, the shit they did in the Philippines....Ironically, it actually isn't super crazy to think that the US would put you in a death camp if they decided you were the 'wrong' minority (waves hands at current events). They were just wrong about ever being even remotely targeted for that.

  • "Dripper"

    "Leaker"

  • InB4 the Non-Voters just start doing the Wilmington Massacre repeatedly.

Check your history books about what happens when the majority of the population has no political voice. Things get ugly.

  • Nope, it's a terrible idea.

Who defines 'service'? Who assigns 'service'? Who decides you have done enough 'service'? Who decides who is capable or not capable of 'service'? What happens when two different officials have different ideas on the above? What happens when different administrative regions have different ideas on the above? What happens when different regions have different numbers of Voters? What are the health risks of 'service'? What the health risks of the jobs that aren't 'service'? What about people who are incapable of doing 'service'? What about people who choose not to do 'service'? How are resources distributed between Voters and Non-Voters? What about political issues that largely only affect Non-Voters? What happens when the Non-Voters vastly outnumber the Voters and rightfully decide this is a crappy system?

I suggest the game Shadowrun if you want a look at a world where the Certified Citizens are a small minority. It's not pretty.

  • You realize that literacy tests were used to exclude minorities from voting, right? The idea is not fine because it's inherently oppressive.

  • What on Earth are you on about?

    Quoting from the study:

"It is important to understand that the DLS represents a minimum floor for decent living. It does not represent a an aspirational standard and certainly does not represent a ceiling. However, it is also a level of welfare not currently achieved by the vast majority of people. A new paper by Hoffman et al finds that 96.5 percent of people in low- and middle-income countries are deprived of at least one DLS dimension...we can conclude that 6.4 billion people, more than 80% of the world's population, are deprived of DLS."

The authors are not suggesting that everyone be forced on DLS at gunpoint. They are suggesting an absolute bare minimum standard that the overwhelming majority of people on Earth do not yet even have.

How the hell do you get from that to some sort of paranoid fantasy where everyone gets exactly the same thing?

  • ITT: people who didn't even glance at the study.
