  • the greatest power of machine learning algorithms is the source of its greatest drawback. they are essentially heuristic models of something, constructed in a way that they are much cheaper to execute than a traditional algorithmic approach. this cheapness results in error, which for a lot of applications is fine because you can refine/check the result with more accurate tools, but it also means you can never just trust it like you can with more traditional tools. this problem is baked into the technology so theres no amount of scale that will make it go away, as we've seen time and again with LLMs. failing to understand this is the mistake most people make when it comes to "AI", and results in all kinds of bad decision making. but in the hands of people who understand the limitations, machine learning can truly be a game changing technology. not chatbots though those are fucking stupid and i hope they go away when the bubble bursts.

  • like we dont love them for it. be honest youve pet a cat just to annoy them before. my cats definitely yell at me just to annoy me. when they do it i sometimes annoy them by picking them up and giving them lots of kisses or turning them upside down lol. the joy of living with cats is their complex personalities, and part of that is them being kind of an asshole sometimes, but turnabout is fair play.

  • i think it was more that they were all really big and couldn't survive a massive resource restriction. we dont have the same problems, being omnivorous generalists who can eat pretty much anything. if something like the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs happened to us a lot of us would die sure, but the species would survive. we could still get power from wind, dams, fossil fuels, and nuclear, and grow food indoors using grow lights. most people wouldnt make it but most likely enough would that wed still have a stable breeding population when the dust settled.

  • so if you tuvixed neelix, would that be splitting neelix into two separate people, nee and lix? in that scenario putting them back together would be ending two lives for the sake of one life, making it kind of the opposite of the original tuvix situation where youre sacrificing one life for two. then again we have to consider that the person we're saving is neelix in that scenario, so on the whole it might be better to leave him separated.

  • this feels like one of those shrink wrapped dinosaur situations. like they arent doing a good job estimating how her soft tissue would have been distributed at all. why are her eyebrows so low, why are her cheeks so lean, why is there so much tissue below her lips, why is her hairline so high and with a bit of a widows peak? it feels like they put a mans tissue distribution on a womans frame completely uncritically and called it good.

    edit: i think the harsh drop lighting theyre displaying this under is making it way worse too. it might not look quite as bad with softer more diffuse lighting.

  • to be fair the overviewer effect has been romanticized and played up by people who literally spent their entire life training and competing for the chance at a few hours or days cumulative time in space while pretending for the deciders and teams of doctors that they arent just normal flawed people like the rest of us. astronauts basically have to buy in to the overviewer effect as one of the things that makes all their sacrifices "worth it", and part of trying to convince themselves is convincing others that its a real thing most people will experience. its more of a placebo effect in reality, though im sure there are people who genuinely felt it. bezos just didnt have to work for it at all so he has no incentive to buy into the hype, total lack of empathy and compassion aside.

  • because it was never vital to survival to have fewer bones. evolution is a term that does a ton of conceptual heavy lifting but has sadly been warped by ignorance and a lack of understanding of the nuance of what is really happening.

    somehow, life existed. we dont really know how it got started but it did. due to the laws of physics and thermodynamics, some life died and some life lived. that went on for a long ass time until today we see the stuff that has survived to now. evolution just says life changes over time because some life dies without reproducing and some life reproduces before dieing. thats it. its a statement about the effect of survivorship bias over the long term existence of life.

    so why didnt animals evolve to have fewer bones? because it never mattered enough to happen. things kept on surviving with the number of bones they have. we can look at them and say their body would function better with more or fewer bones, or different chemistry, or different soft tissue, or whatever you like. but none of those things mattered enough to happen, or if they did happen they werent better enough to change anything at the time. but also animals do have different numbers of bones, just not so different.

    i wish i could describe this better, but evolution isnt an active process. if you have to think of it as a thing, keep in mind that it produces only what barely works. every adaptation we have was developed by the deaths of countless individuals, so we only have it because at some point it was necessary, or so benefitial it couldn't help but propagate. having way less bones was never either of those things.

  • there is a distinct you, its all the cells with your dna, and theres no bacteria inside your body. your stomach and intestines are functionally a well controlled part of the outside of your body. bacteria being inside you is an infection and is generally considered bad for your health. by mass the vast majority of your body is your own cells, so implying most of your body is stuff thats "not you" is pretty hyperbolic.

    your argument that it would probably be bad to kill these mites is an appeal to nature. just because theyre there doesnt mean they serve a vital function. im sure there are any number of disorders caused by them, but whether there are any caused by them being absent neither of us can say. maybe there is, maybe there isnt. its possible that no one can say at the moment.
