  • I think both of you have valid experiences. Not everyone uses social media the same way. From switching from being a lurker to being a poster, it's gotten me to focus more on how people interact with content. I operate more like QuadratureSufer to find smaller creators, but plenty are going to do as you've seen of just subbing a few big groups and letting content trickle up to them. They'll get the real popular stuff, but may miss things people subbing to the source will get to enjoy.

    Ultimately both are valid approaches, but if nothing ever gets crossposted up to the big subs, that's just less eyes possible on the small subs for people that dont browse way down /All. Posting something from a big comm down to a small one doesn't seem beneficial since why would one interact with it on the small comm when there will be less commenting going on there? That's my personal thoughts at least.

  • Sorry. Addendum: I see no issue with cross posting without asking. We post to get our message out there and cross posting aids in that process. I like that seeing our posts have been cross posted is easier to see these days on web Lemmy and many apps, as if my stuff is cross posted, I just like to know about it so I can answer any questions, since I focus on more educational subjects.

  • If anything, I'd prefer to see people cross post from small communities to bigger ones, since they will give exposure to the smaller communities. But the meme and news comms are already pretty big, so cross posting from one big group to another just feels like cluttering up people's feeds with duplicates.

  • I found my Brother HL out on the curb on a lightly rainy day. I had passed by it on my walk thinking it was an Epson inkjet, but on my way back I saw it was one of those Brother BW lasers the Internet nerds always go on about so I brought it inside and dried it off.

    Fired right up and has been handling my once a month or so printing duties ever since, still on the same toner that I found it with. Best non-commercial printer I've ever used.

    It's one of those things I've been meaning to do since the 2 services were bundled, but whenever I got bored with YouTube or whatever other streaming things I was using, I'd take a break and read a book from my backlog or play a video game and then forget to try them.

    I just want longer content to put on in the background or while I do chores, I just don't want it to be AI slop.

  • I really need to give this and/or Curiosity Steam a try. I still get a lot of use out of YouTube Premium (oh, boo yourself 😄) but for documentary type things, it's so hard to sure through the AI generated stuff anymore.

  • Lol, I'm just picturing a bunch of middle-aged guys throwing their backs out trying to suplex each other.

    As ridiculous as everything with this guy is, going on free dates with his girlfriend and sending himself to a different sports fantasy camp every week is seeming much less damaging than what a lot of other cronies have been up to. I'll take funding a manchild's excursions over a pointless war any day.

    Send him up in one of Elon's rockets next for his space camp adventure!

  • If this was someplace more commercial like reddit, I'd probably feel ok with occasionally spamming the charity I volunteer at, as it ties in with the content I share, and of course we would enjoy donations. There's 2 reasons I don't do it here.

    This space I feel is meant to be for users, by users. I don't want anyone to feel they owe me something for posting, sharing, or interacting with them. I'm here because I like most of you all. I think it's great we still have an online space like this.

    I also think while we need assistance, we are from all over the world, and I think people here should support their local direct action groups before they toss anything my way. Your local groups need you more than you need me. I tell everyone to kick in to them before even thinking of me. The sole exception was the LemmySilver contest, but that was by the World admin team, so that was an organization offering specifically charity money. Even then, I'm pretty sure I asked the community if they were cool with it going to my group.

    I just like that money really doesn't come into play in Lemmy. Shit is expensive these days and it feels like everyone is looking to get a slice from everyone else. Keeping this place non-commercial and with nobody looking for a transactional relationship seems like a huge plus.

    If you haven't discovered us yet on !superbowl@lemmy.world, you should join us. The French and German communities there have been very helpful there, and there is also a person that researches Aztec religion where we have discussed some of their linguistics as well and the trouble people have with determining what kind of owl Chiquatli is supposed to be.

    Hearing some of the Portuguese owl words is helpful as well. I try to find photos and articles from all over the world, and having you all explain the languages to me helps me greatly.

  • I think I'm going to side with you on this one. They start out calm enough, simple feeding and housing requirements, they can't hurt you as much as some of these larger animals, and most don't seem to get too bad an attitude even as adults unless they're cornered. Honestly my biggest problem would be them going to the bathroom everywhere and in places not readily accessible to clean. Eww.

  • Thank you for sharing all that! You've given me a lot to read up on. I was intrigued when you mentioned the Owl of Athena/Owl of Minerva in modern religious context.

    Also very interesting about the confusion in Spanish about the confusion of the barn owl and screech owl. There is another person here I talk with about the confusion of them in Mesoamerican religion, so I'll have to see that paper.

    Owls are present in many belief systems, in good and bad incarnations, so I'm always curious to hear about them.

  • I had bought my 08 Honda Fit (Jazz to the non-Americans) brand new. It got near 190,000 miles and my wife was begging me for a year to pick a new car, but nothing I drove felt like it was worth what it cost.

    She decided she gave me enough time, and she went and bought herself a new car and now I'm making her last year of payments on her Hyundai Elantra. It isn't what I'd pick, but the features for the price are amazing and it has about 150,000 less miles. I gave my Honda to my niece as her first car.

    The Hyundai doesn't physically fit me well, so if I ever do find a car I enjoy, I at least I'll have something newer to trade. Otherwise I'll drive this until the wheels fall off.

  • I searched it quick to see if the poking is another tip to make it peel easier, but I came across this old Lifehacker article testing non-poked, poked on the pointy end, and poked on the (supposed proper) blunt end.

    The hole in the fat end lets the air bubble escape. This seems to prevent cracking, as the expanding hot air has a place to escape, and also, I think more importantly for some tasks, lets the fat end of the cooking egg expand. This should leave you with 2 nice round ends of the egg, making a more aesthetic presentation. (I'm curious to see if you can confirm this!)

    The pointy side poke led to cracks and peeling mess in the article, and the non-poked eggs were now unattractive compared to the properly pricked ones now that the author could look at both side by side.

  • I have seen those cookers but never had one. Me liking hardboiled eggs is a somewhat recent thing. Cold eggs never were very appealing to me.

    I give them the same equator counter bonk and then peel them under running water. I'll have to give the rolling method a shot next time.

  • Very nice! I have some weird texture issues and hate tiny shell bits.

    I've been on a pickled egg kick lately and I like cooking them in the Instant Pot. Best consistently peeling eggs I've ever made, and I haven't had any green yolks. I love it.

  • I do get that, and with the .ML group starting this platform, of course there are a lot of kinds of leftist people here. In a way I enjoy it, even if I don't agree with a number of people's views. Spending time here has really made me confused as to what descriptor I could put on my general set of political beliefs.

    The part that frustrates me is all posts are either every comment just says the same thing (ie. This person sucks, may some disaster fall upon them.) or it turns into people bickering about who is the best type of leftist. So I get people complaints about either "group think" or that everyone is just fighting each other in every thread like how communists and anarchists seem to have done for the past century.

    I don't see much education, discussion/debate, or anyone organizing or promoting direct action like I'd hope. I'm not a real fan of the ML philosophy, but someone like cowbee I see share a ton of reading material and educational stuff for their belief system is what I'd personally like to see more of from folks like the anarchists and dem socialists. I'd like to see people share stories from programs they're involved in. I'd love to learn more about stuff like Food Not Bombs or how people are trying to unionize, not from news articles, but by the people here on Lemmy.

    Being here got me to take action helping the wildlife in my community, and I'd like to hear about other people actually becoming forces of change. If all of us just stay behind a screen arguing with each other, what is the point of that? You guys have to be up to some good stuff, and I want to see it and be inspired. I got near infinite mainstream news sites if I want to be annoyed and worked up, but I'm here.
