I make things with computers. Preferably artsy things, but I also like to work on random scripts and pipelines. I like D&D & video games, but don't always have time to play them. I like pet chicken. I watch soccer, especially NWSL & USWNT, as well as some WSL and whatever happens to be on.

  • It wasn't one specific thing. We were switching from Facebook Messenger, and found ourselves not wanting to use it all that much, often falling back to Messenger. For me, personally, I also didn't like that it didn't have a web client.

  • Yea, we tried Signal a while back, but for whatever reason we didn't care for it.

  • Thanks for the info. My wife and I tried Signal a while back and didn't care for it.

I'm trying to get xmpp going today, even just as a test. 🤞

  • I guess it doesn't have to be, but I really like the idea of having control over the data, and not handing it over to some other entity, even if they say they're not evil. It just seems like communication without a 3rd party in between is a good idea, so I'm trying to make that work for now.

  • I believe Nextcloud Talk uses FCM for notifications. The issue doesn't seem to be on the FCM side, it's the client marking messages as read incorrectly, or not notifying because it thinks it's running in the foreground, etc. They're definitely working on these issues, but my family has lost confidence in it.

I will check out Snikket, thanks!

    Reliable messenger for family use?

  • Oof, I never made it past the first 2 episodes. Maybe I should give the third a try, but damn, they were trying so hard to be... I don't know, edgy? Crude? It just seemed to be made for a different audience, which is fine, it just wasn't for me. But I liked Academy, so what do I know...

  • Here's me being the first to tell you that AIO works great for me. Installation was super easy on Linux, and not so bad on synology. Updating the containers is only 2 buttons, so that's easy as well.

  • This is a meme? Don't we have other communities to focus on the awfulness of everything?

  • How is this programming humor?

  • Yes, you're right on the internet, of course. The artist has no idea what they're talking about, should delete their comic and hang their head in shame. Good job. You win 1 internet point.

  • My kid plays switch and I grew up in the 80s. I think he's talking more dos/windows 3.1 times, Super Nintendo, maybe Sega genesis/mega drive times, where many games did not have saves. I remember playing sonic and when you ran out of lives, that was that. When I bought X-Wing, it came with a massive manual.

But whatever, it's a comic about nostalgia. People will always be nostalgic about their own childhood.

  • You're thinking of a different time.

  • Years later he learned the difference between 'can' and 'will'.

  • How many times can we post this in a one week span?

  • Birds: Why is that funny?

  • "market reaction suggests that more capital isn’t going to be a viable substitute for a business model anymore."

Time to find the next vague thing that investors can pour trillions into without really knowing what it is or does.

  • Episode 3 was peak awesomeness.

They have shenanned! If we don't do something, they will shenanagain!
