  • I agree that Saving Private Ryan action scenes are supposed to show what you're talking about, but that's not what they do. To an American audience (which the film was made for) the chaos and horror is justified and honorable. The audience has been taught that America is always on the right side of history, they have to honor soldiers at every sporting event, they have a general riding a horse into battle in the middle of their town square, they had to pledge allegiance to war every day as a kid, etc etc. The title Saving Private Ryan tells you everything; war is heroic and necessary.

  • That movie is textbook glorifying war 😭 The first 15 minutes especially!! It's literally called Saving Private Ryan as in here's a movie about heroic saviors in a situation that is only possible because of war. Majority of the audience doesn't leave a film like that thinking "war is so awful" but instead thinking "wow the scene where they stormed normandy was awesome it was filmed in such a cool way omg i wish i was also able to be as brave and heroic as those men."

    I think that movie is great, but it is impossible to make any media about war, that directly shows the war, without coming across as pro-war.

  • Pretty much every war movie glorifies war haha. Saving Private Ryan, Dunkirk, and 1917 are famous because of their awesome looking action scenes. All those films glorify war and convey a sense of heroism, urgency, and righteousness for people involved in a war. If the director's wanted to make a film that didn't glorify war, they would've focused on the shitty parts of war instead of showing the audience all the cool heroic things soldiers get up to.

    Grave of the Fireflies does not glorify war. Thin Red Line is maybe the only movie about soldiers that doesn't make war seem cool.

  • Dawg you seriously need to chill out. Why are you being all “gotcha, there’s that blind hope you stupid idiot.” I don’t think hope = faith. Hope can physically manifest, hope is a force. I am placing hope in the party that half of voters vote for because it is a popular party. Political parties have the capacity to change, they aren’t stagnant. A couple hundred years ago democrats were fighting for chattel slavery and republicans were seen as liberal comparatively.

    I don’t like the Democratic Party, I don’t like most of its elected officials, most of its policy, but I refuse to give it up and let it become completely fascist. Because if that happens, then almost every single voter is supporting fascism.

    I wish it was different (and I think it can change further down the line) but third parties don’t work in America. We need to be working to fix what we currently have.

  • Yeah I get what you’re saying. I think that on the one hand the Democratic Party is awful. On the other hand, the democrats are by far the largest political party that has the capacity to fight the current administration. Zohran is running as a democrat, but he is starkly different than status quo democrats. I think a democratic party filled with socialist thinkers is going to be more successful (and palatable to the average citizen) than a relatively obscure socialist 3rd party. I also think that a socialist 3rd party would be ideal, but given the current timeframe it’s not going to work until it’s a critical mass w/in democrats.

  • I don’t think you understand what hope is. The Hedges quote reads like an oxymoron “there is no such thing as hope and determination / here are a bunch of solutions that rely on hope and determination.”

    Like you obviously want things to change, and you just listed how to change things, yet you aren’t hopeful in them? Like do you think all the solutions you’re talking about will never work? Hope isn’t an abstract concept. To hope doesn’t mean you think “man I wish things were better, but I guess they’ll never change.” Hope is the driving force behind change. If you weren’t hopeful, you wouldn’t be calling for arms against fascism.

  • Cmon bro don’t start with some “it’s too late” doomer bs. We should’ve been preparing in 2016, we should’ve prepared when Bush got elected, we should’ve prepared when prisons began to expand, when they passed the Civil Rights Act and it wasn’t nearly enough, when women couldn’t vote, etc, etc.

    Obviously we can’t go back and change that, but we can take back what was stolen. We have the power now to affect the present as a reflection of the future. Like god damn the thing you should never let them take away is hope.

  • Yeah I really want to see like a queer theologians perspective on this idea though. The Bible talks a lot about man and woman and how they have to be together, but I wonder how you apply this to modern day. My gut response is that when the Bible was being written, the idea of gender and long-term non hetero relationships weren’t a thing. But I know there had to have been some people nonconforming to gender even if they weren’t explicitly thinking along those lines and some sort of non-hetero relationships that went beyond married men having boy lovers.

  • A mistranslation isn’t an intervention from God, they exist because humans (and the Bible) aren’t infallible. The Bible is a document made by hundreds of authors over hundreds of years leading to countless interpretations- this is why theologians exist, this is why there are different sects of Jews and Christians, etc.

    The story of Adam and Eve is another example of the patriarchy as represented in the Bible. But the two of them are also described as being of “one body”- one cannot exist without the other- which implies some equality. It’s a contradictory statement and the Bible is full of them.

    Many theologians would also argue that contradictions like this aren’t a mistake. God is a being beyond human comprehension, and his message can’t be written down one to one. An overarching theme of the Bible is that the only way to come close to God and find his message is through other people. You have to go out there and love your neighbor.

  • It’s not necessarily a real historical event, but an incredibly important story about liberation of the oppressed that influenced countless real historical movements.

    Herodotus’ histories is mostly fictional but you wouldn’t want to forget it. Same with the Iliad/Odyssey, Epic of Gilgamesh, etc

  • In terms of explicitly stating issues, almost every genre of rap counts. Even some bs like Michigan trap can be interpreted as dudes talking about how shitty their lives are because of the social structures they live in.

    In the same vain, every time an artist makes something completely new it’s a political statement. For example, right now there’s a lot of trans artists making extremely over the top pop music that would only be possible with modern music making techniques. And although the lyrical quality is often stuff like repeatedly saying “cunt” I can’t help but interpret it as a form of protest.

    Because of the internet there isn’t one voice of protest music. Everyone is getting a different feed and exposure to different artists. But so much of it is a form of protest, you just have to look between the lines.

  • Well yeah obviously ai is a huge thing. What I mean is specifically, in a yt video for example, the creator makes a concerted effort to show how they used ai to find an answer.

  • It honestly was fine for a kids movie. The story was so generic that it was impossible to mess up and would work with any character/setting.

    I was disappointed with how boring it was. They should’ve leaned way more into the emoji aspect.

  • It’s been lasted more than a year. Its super easy for beginners and the gap between never played and mediocre player is pretty small in my experience. Groups of different ages/skill/athleticism can play the game relatively easy together. You can get drunk while playing and still be good. You don’t have to break a sweat if you don’t want to. Games are short.

    I think it gets way too much flak and it is a little too overhyped rn. But it’s a top contender for the ideal casual game.
