Yeah, that's how we do it. Pre load the temperature before 4pm, timers, solar panels and a battery. It's definitely worth it for us, but if someone doesn't adjust their habits, they can end up worse off on the solar saver tariffs.

The part that this headline skips over is that it's followed by 5 hours of pricing that are 3 times the regular rate, and then the rest of the day is a rare slightly under the old rate. The expensive rate kicks in between 4pm and 9pm, which is pretty much when the solar supply eases off and dries up.

If you work from home, it's possible to shift some of the big load equipment to early afternoon, but some, like ovens and heaters aren't so easy to shift. You really need to do the maths to see if it works.

If you've got a battery, you're in a better position, because you can use your own solar and/or the free hours to top the battery up, and then draw on it during the expensive hours. Our battery isn't quite big enough to carry us through 5 hours, but it gets us most of the way there, so the maths made it worth us to change to the new tariff.

People aren't trying to trap you. What you're seeing is vulnerable people who have seen and heard all of this before trying to get your boundaries out in the open before your instance gets momentum. That way, they can decide whether to interact with your instance, block it or defederate it before being exposed to yet more hate targeting them under the veneer of "civil debate".

There's two main culprits for runners knee.

If you have suddenly increased the distance you run, you may need to ease back, and do a gradual increase instead, which gives your muscles and soft tissue time to adapt to your increased load.

Otherwise, it's often a gait issue. Ankles that roll inwards or outwards too much etc can cause torsion pain. In this case, it means better shoes, and ideally, shoes that address the issues with your gait. The thing about gait issues is that in the day to day, we don't even know the imbalances are there, but when you start running a lot, the increased strike rate and strike strength means issues can start to show up. In my case, I need shoes with support that stop my left ankle from rolling inwards.

That's exactly where I'm at. I don't align with a lot of the choices Rimu makes for Piefed, but I am 100% for him designing a tool that works for him, even when the defaults he chooses don't align with my preferences. As long as I have the option to disable/change them as an admin, then I'd rather see a passionate dev creating tools that they want to use than a burned out dev creating something their heart isn't invested in.

Because I don't believe that kids (or people in generally) magically develop effective techniques for dealing with addiction and bullying when they reach a certain arbitrary age. They don't suddenly know how to deal with complex social situations when they turn 16. They don't know instantly gain knowledge of how to deal with the addictive nature of gamified social media platforms when they turn 16. So hiding them from that stuff, and then letting their first exposure to it be when they're trying to learn to be independent and less likely to look for answers outside of their own experience solves nothing.

Social media can be addictive, screen time can be addictive, and navigating online scammers, bullies and fraudsters is something that takes experience to work recognise and work through.

So I approached it by talking to my kid about recognising what this stuff looks like, about the importance of not revealing personal information, of asking questions if they have doubts. I also let them have as much screen time as they wanted, and told them that the issue isn't how much time they spend in front of the computer, the issue is whether the computer is the only thing they want to spend time with. If they always say no when someone asks if they want to do something else, if the devices start to get in the way of life, and they never want to leave their room, get resentful at having to do chores etc, then the balance is off. And that's what I cared about. Teaching the kid how to fit this stuff in to their life whilst they were young enough to still take my advice onboard.

Edit - Unrelated, but maybe not unrelated, I also told me kid I don't care if they swear around the house, with their friends or whatever. However, I also told them that lots of people do care if they swear, and they need to be aware of the impact that their choice of words has on the people around them. Swearing at a teacher at school for example, is going to get them in trouble, and "I can swear at home" isn't an excuse for that. I tried to teach my child that the issue isn't the words, but rather, the way your words impact the people around you and your relationships with them.

Kids need to learn by doing and by trying. They don't learn by being told by their parents "this is how it is". And the more hard rules you put in front of them, the more things they have the need to rebel against and push back against when they try and find their independence. And every single kid that has ever lived explores and pushes at boundaries in some form or another. So don't turn the shitty harmful things in to forms of finding independence.

You give kids independence by giving them agency in their own life, and the life experience to use that agency in an informed way.

I've reached the age where I'm starting to noticably slow down and things are getting harder, I've had pneumonia a couple of times, a bunch of surgeries, and possibly covid in the middle of it.

If I'm honest, I've not got back to where I was, and I likely never will. And it's been really demotivating, meaning that I'll pause my runs, and lose momentum if I'm not careful.

What worked for me was making sure it wasn't just me. I encourage my partner to come out for a walk when I run, so that we can push each other in to moving. I also set myself an event to train for, and once I've done it in a few weeks, I'll set myself another event, even if it's a year away, and use an app/plan to give me some structure to my training.

I have particularly relied on TrainAsOne, as it adjusts with my fitness, but honestly, any sort of plan that gives you an actual plan, will help when it comes to sustaining your momentum.

All of that being said, I'm typing this, after having put off my scheduled run because it's cold outside. But as soon as I've sent this, I'm going to and get dressed and run. And having put that out there in a world, now, I'll actually do it :)
