  • I know this was just referencing a random Democratic city, but as a resident of Honolulu, our blueness is a bit weird. We just effectively reelected Ed Case by like 30 points in his first competitive primary since 2018, but we also have two medium progressive senators. It's diverse and Democratic, but not very politically active with a bias toward name recognition and seniority. Honolulu, Ohio would keep the state red.

  • You'd think if these party officials were so concerned about progressive candidates having a hard time with certain electorates or just in general, they, as loyal Democratic Party functionaries, would be sending extra resources and working double time to promote the candidate. If bland genocide-tolerant moderates are better for general elections then you can focus money and support on helping shore up the DSA candidates they think will have a harder time.

    Oddly that hasn't generally been the response.

    The story came from the Salem Radio Network, which is not based in or focused on Salem, Oregon, but a part of the Salem Media Group out of Texas.

    The founders of Salem Communications support various religious causes, and are noted for their role in spreading politically conservative opinion to areas dependent on radio for current events information.

    So that explains why this story doesn't seem to have any background information on the "Democrat" or interrogate the idea that Republicans are voting for personal freedom.

  • It's needed to turn conservatives against ICE, endless war, mass surveillance, and other things where libertarians differ from conservatives. Send them a Reason link talking about it from a conservative framing and they'll react differently from sending them a Common Dreams link. Libertarians are usually an aesthetic styling on just straight conservatism, but the authoritarianism has actually awoken some of them to their claimed principles.

  • He's just not a good politician, and that's separate from him just being a shitty centrist. Half your caucus cosponsors it and that's your answer to the question? After previously cosponsoring it?

    I can at least respect the shitty centrists that are able to spin all answer to sound like there's some short term half measure that's achievable and occupying their focus, but he doesn't even have that. Just an awkward dud of a human being raised to power solely because donors like how bad he is.

    In a body whose members are selected largely based on charisma we somehow end up with two leaders incapable of making the party look good when asked a question on camera.

  • He's a particularly bad president in a lot of ways, but I'm not sure this is unusual. Biden dumped bad issues on Harris and Buttigieg and blamed external problems when things weren't going well. Leaders taking responsibility for things is more something we desire to see and praise when it happens than the norm.
