  • -40F to +40F in about a four hour period.

  • Most of these laws were written by dirty old men who want to pretend it's not their fault they cheated on their wives with younger women.

I hold an opposing view: the person in the relationship is the one with the responsibility to abide by whatever rules that relationship has. A third party knowingly participating in cheating is also being a jerk, but at a much lower level.

  • Yes, I'll tell my mother to host a PiHole.

Of course bringing it with her would require something to tether it to other than the phone she's actually using as a phone (I think), and a way to power it all. She's going to need a bigger purse.

Or she could access it remotely. I doubt her residential DSL comes with a static IP, so she's going to have to get a domain name and set up dynamic DNS... oh, and route the appropriate port to her Pi through the ISP's NAT router, assuming it actually supports that. Maybe she should buy the latest fancy one from GL.iNet with those big antennas and OpenWRT.

I think I might send her that AdGuard link instead.

  • Neither this screenshot nor their website claims to block ordinary advertisements.

  • I've been recommending Mullvad DNS for its adblock functionality. Quad9 does not provide this.

I am now seeking recommendations for an equivalent I can recommend to friends and family for use on devices that do not easily support system-wide adblocking.

  • 1Password is the best they could come up with when "best" is measured in dollars contributed.

  • And another. This is the same bird a month later.

  • Somebody already beat me to gosling, but have another

  • The more corrupt the leaders of a country are, the harder they protest that the country is anything but.

  • People aren't always honest on dating sites. Something they're particularly likely to be dishonest about is what kind of relationship they're looking for. Women will sometimes say they're looking for a long-term relationship even if they might be open to something else because saying they're open to casual sex is "slutty". Men will often say they're looking for a long-term relationship even though they're not because women won't meet them if they don't say that because it's "slutty".

That may be what you encountered: a man trying to see if you really meant what your profile said, or it might be a man trying to deceive you to get casual sex when that's not what you're looking for. Either way, a follow-up will not lead to the long-term relationship you're seeking.

Edit: I also wouldn't characterize his behavior as "ghosting". Ghosting is cutting off communication without explanation. He gave you an explanation.

  • Creeps want that. Anyone who wants to watch nonconsensual pornography is a creep. Much as rape is often about power more than sexual desire, I suspect many of these creeps want to see a politician they dislike in a degrading situation.

  • every aeroplane should be slung on a massive slingshot into the sky

Winch launching gliders is a thing.

  • It's easy to find examples of homemade guns. Here's a blog full of them: https://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/author/improguns/

Most of them are made with crude metalworking, not 3D printing. Making a quality firearm is difficult; making one that goes bang most times the trigger is pulled is not.

  • Yes, these Gen Zers graduated from high school/college, got their first jobs and started attending concerts and festivals around this time, but they also missed out on fundamental life lessons due to their severely limited social contact and interaction (from roughly 2020-2022).

I know different people reach developmental milestones at different times, but potty training is usually complete well before high school graduation.

  • I’ve launched off the front of aircraft carriers hundreds of times, have a Master’s degree in aeronautical engineering, and am a test pilot and even I wouldn’t suggest to the Navy how to engineer specific systems on its ships,

Naval aviator, combat veteran, test pilot, aeronautical engineer, space shuttle pilot, space shuttle commander, captain Mark Kelly significantly understates his qualifications. People who know a lot of stuff usually know what they don't know.

  • Tell them to turn on fediverse sharing in the Threads account they already have.

I can already hear "No! Not like that!". Fair enough, but that's the thing most of your non-technical friends will actually do if you ask them. Be sure you have an account somewhere that can interact with it. Perhaps some will get interested enough to make accounts somewhere better.

  • I think the goal is to grant exceptions in exchange for bribes or political favors, because the FCC has already behaved that way with a similar rule about routers.

  • Thanks for the clickbait-skip. There's still an important point missing: this doesn't apply to ownership, use, or sale of existing devices. It doesn't even block importation of existing models. It blocks certification of new models
