  • I’ve launched off the front of aircraft carriers hundreds of times, have a Master’s degree in aeronautical engineering, and am a test pilot and even I wouldn’t suggest to the Navy how to engineer specific systems on its ships,

Naval aviator, combat veteran, test pilot, aeronautical engineer, space shuttle pilot, space shuttle commander, captain Mark Kelly significantly understates his qualifications. People who know a lot of stuff usually know what they don't know.

  • Tell them to turn on fediverse sharing in the Threads account they already have.

I can already hear "No! Not like that!". Fair enough, but that's the thing most of your non-technical friends will actually do if you ask them. Be sure you have an account somewhere that can interact with it. Perhaps some will get interested enough to make accounts somewhere better.

  • I think the goal is to grant exceptions in exchange for bribes or political favors, because the FCC has already behaved that way with a similar rule about routers.

  • Thanks for the clickbait-skip. There's still an important point missing: this doesn't apply to ownership, use, or sale of existing devices. It doesn't even block importation of existing models. It blocks certification of new models

  • Using a big tech option for something like a password manager is a bad idea in general. Eggs, baskets, etc....

  • That he's stupid, and an asshole is not in dispute.

  • "Distribute" could mean "show to any person", even with the consent of all involved when one of them is underage. These laws weren't designed for teenagers with smartphones.

  • This article says he was 18 at the time and the charges involve a video. If he and his slightly younger girlfriend recorded themselves having sex, that's a different story than most people would assume from the headline.

Other news stories about him suggest he's an asshole, and his parents are obviously assholes, but we should not condemn teenagers as pedophiles for having sex with similar-age teenagers.

  • Yelling at people who finally did the thing you've thought they should do for a while is counterproductive.

  • The default user agent string for the browser that comes with the Steam Deck appears to identify it as Linux, so anybody counting that way without explicitly separating it would count it as Linux.

  • People have been claiming that the current year is the "year of the Linux desktop" because of some improvement to Linux usability or action Microsoft took to offend people for decades. The claim has not come true by any reasonable metric for just as long.

  • In the original sense, trolling is a forum post that attracts predictable responses from ignorant participants while being obvious to those who are more knowledgeable. In moderation, it's a harmless practical joke.

It has come to mean internet harassment meant to make someone miserable, which is never harmless. Some might argue it's justified if the target is harming others.

  • It would be less surprising to me from someone who doesn't understand how computers work at all and only wants to use SMS. It's weird from someone who already uses several messaging apps.

  • What (if anything) does that friend use for messaging?

  • And the video stability doesn’t match with someone holding up a phone like that.

Image stabilization can be pretty good lately, but I must admit that I don't spend much time watching handheld phone selfie videos.

  • You probably also guessed that the stripper isn't actually attracted to you.

  • I watched the three video clips and would not have initially guessed the leotard gymnast and the mechanic are generated. The sad gymnast looks a little plastic.

What actually looks fake in the mechanic video after a couple loops is the valve notches on the pistons, which are rotated from the correct orientation, and overlapping in a way that the laws of physics would not support.

  • I don't see anything in the Bluesky posts I would expect to get moderated on a .world server. Odd.

  • Sure, you have the right to manage your servers however you like... and I have the right to unfairly use you as a proxy for my rage at everyone who has ever broken the Internet's global nature to make their server log files a little less noisy.

  • You have experienced the problem and you do it anyway?

Services that do region blocking also tend to block public VPNs. Breaking the internet like this is bad, and you should feel bad for doing it.
