  • Sam saying in the Layover that GYG is "awful" is absolute sacrilege. It's easily in my—and most people's I know/have talked about this question with—top 2 or 3 fast food places in Aus. Many would place it #1. My biggest critique is the prices; it's very expensive compared to KFC, Maccas, or Red Rooster, especially compared to the portion sizes they serve.

  • There are plenty of trail running races that make it work.

    True, but I think trail running is fundamentally different.

    The environmental calculus is different: it's just worse to litter on a trail than on a city street.

    The practicalities are different: it's harder to find a place where a drinks table and a bin can both sit comfortably easily in range of the trail but 20 metres apart from each other. And it's harder for volunteers to collect the cups that missed the bin.

    The goals of runners are different. It's much less normal to target a specific time in a trail run because the peculiarities of often less standard distances, different surfaces, and climbs/drops just make that less standard than road races.

  • Moving towards less disposable products is good, obviously, but damn I would be annoyed if I was in that Paris marathon targeting a PB and got slowed down by having to wait to fill up.

    Mandatory refillable bottles are now ubiquitous in trail running, and I think that's fantastic. It's an environment where targeting specific times makes less sense anyway. But for road races, I think Paris's idea of making it mandatory for anyone slower than 2:50 is too extreme. I would be much more amenable to it if the cutoff was 4:00. I feel like that's roughly the slowest time where people are seriously targeting a specific time, rather than their goal being just to finish.

    Chicago's optional refill stations will be interesting to watch, but seem ultimately pointless. I doubt they'll see much use.

  • I am absolutely loving this season. Great challenges and by far their best race-based ruleset to date. But I'm especially enjoying, for the first time in a long time, the travel show aspect. The amount of reverence for the nature and culture of Japan in this season has been delightful.

  • With the sushi belt, did the rules say the options chosen had to be secret? When I first heard the rules it sounded to me like a legit strategy could be to publicly chose three options at different prices that are clearly identifiable and then shuffle them up and blindly identify.

  • It can be noticeable given enough time or a high enough level of vigorous activity.

    So are we talking this would impact you if you're an elite athlete, but not an advanced amateur? Or is it more that it'll impact sports where changing direction quickly matters (like any football or court sport) but not more steady ones (like cycling or running)?

  • Unfortunately I think you're right about Facebook. If you're not on Facebook you're putting yourself at a significant disadvantage in terms of reaching a broad audience. If you're a small customer-facing (i.e. not B2B) business or grassroots organisation you need to be on Facebook.

    But I just don't think the same thing is true of Xitter. And hasn't been since long before paedo guy bought it. Average people don't use Twitter and never have. It's used by a smaller group of journalists, techies, and the terminally online.

  • Jury vs judge trial is a separate axis from common law vs civil law. You can have common law (where decisions of higher courts are deemed binding on lower courts) even if lower courts are all judge-only trials. You can have trials decided by a jury where every decision made by a judge is ultimately answerable only to written statute, with prior judicial judgments being at best persuasive.
