I really wish you could do that thing some video games do with horses where you can just summon it and it magically appears next to you, but for bikes...and IRL. Because yeah, carrying the locks and fussing around with places to lock it up (not to mention the fear it gets stolen anyway) is a pain.
But cycling is also like 4 times the speed of walking, so unless my trip is less than one kilometre, it's just such a no brainer compared to walking.
I even find that in places with good infrastructure, a fit person can ride at roughly the same average speed as a bus. It obviously goes much faster, but the frequent stopping lets a bike catch up.
My city used to have a docked bike share system. $2 to get as many trips as you want within 24 hours, as long as each trip is less than 30 minutes. It was operated by advertising company JCDecaux in exchange for them having the right to place ads on council buses, on billboards, and as street furniture. Sadly, they got rid of it in late 2020...but let JCDecaux keep the ad space. They promised a replacement would be "coming soon". But their idea of a replacement is private companies with dockless escooters and ebikes. They're $1 flagfall and then $0.60 per minute after that. In practice, a whole order of magnitude more expensive than the old CityCycle was. Very disappointing.
