Avid PC gamer, Linux convert, SCP fan.

Love Science Fiction, Cyberpunk, post-apocalyptic settings; Fan of the games of the defunct Arkane Studios. Listening to (Power-, Speed-, Thrash-)Metal, Gothic, Deathrock, EBM, Vaporwave, Lo-Fi; Classic and Musicals are fine too. Can't stand Hip-Hop.

Owned by two cats, recently divorced, blessed with a personality disorder (AVPD) - pensioned (even the state has the opinion I'm a total wreck lol). This causes me to be unable to keep up personal connections and makes me ghost literally everyone, so if it happens to you, sorry in advance.

Chronically online.

Pro GenAI, but Anti-GenAI-Corpos; this technology should be available to everyone, which would only be fair since we all contributed to it. Datasets and Models should be under the jurisdiction of UNESCO, since they are literally the distilled cultural output of humanity.

  • Non-technical people should not have a say in security at all. Just as the opinions of Joe Shmoe should be disregarded in sectors like public health, science, law and politics. We have to start to purge the people knowing shit in all important areas. Crap like a shitstorm on X (aka nazi central) or something should be used to target the participants in those campaigns to mark them as unreliable bums.

Edit: more extreme people than me might propose a system that is close to the Black Mirror episode "Hated in the Nation", but not with killing the fuckers participating, but by taking away their talking rights on online platforms. Humanity would be better off this way.

  • LOL why are those systems even exposed to the internet? This is fucking inane, making sure those systems can't connect to the internet is basic security, and whoever decided to cut corners here should get fired, sued, sentenced and fined, all of this into eternity because their decision was fucking braindead. VPNs are NOT a new technology.

  • This has nothing to do with weather conditions or lighting. It has to do with basic statistics: if you are looking for a very small subset of identifiers in a very large pool, and you have a system that has a (pretty good btw) 96% chance to read an identifier correctly, you will get more and more false positives the more identifiers you scan.

That means expanding the Flock network also expands the amount of false positives.

This cannot be avoided, except if you are able to make the 96% rate better; but be reminded if this system would get upgraded from 96% to 99.6%, total precision would only increase about 1% (from 29.1% to 30.1%). reducing the number of false positives in this example by only 15 licence plates.

To actually reduce the amount of false positives, you would have to make the system less sensitive - which isn't possible in this context.

  • It's basic statistics.

    • True Positives (TP) 415
    • False Positives (FP) 1,012
    • False Negatives (FN) (Calculated using 96% Recall) 17 Target plates that were missed.
    • Precision TP / (TP + FP) 29.1% When it hits, it’s wrong most of the time.
    • Recall (Assumed from Global Acc.) 96.0% It successfully catches almost all targets.

That’s the problem if you are fishing for a very small number of targets out of an absolutely bonkers large pool of potential targets - at some point your false positives start becoming more and more prevalent in relation to actual positives. That is simply statistics and if flock can’t improve the global accuracy by some exponents, this problem will grow - the more Flock gets used and the more licence plates they are scanning, the more the false positives increase.

And it is a massive problem, because the false positive marks you as a criminal - that means any legal recourse gets expensive and painful. This technology creates more problems for everyday people than the amount of issues it removes by tracking actual criminals.

Cutting them down with a reciprocating saw is absolutely justified. These things are an affront to privacy and accuse random citizens of being guilty of felonies.

  • algorytme, depassed and Capitalisme for sure aren't.

  • As soon as the information comes from somewhere you can't verify directly, assume that it is misinformation. You can reduce the likelyhood of it being misinformation by vetting sources and verifying that other sources give the same information. But in the end - if you haven't seen it with your own eyes, you cannot fully depend on it, just make educated guesses if the sources that have proven themselves to you agree on something.

Actually, this has been true since at least the advent of Facebook, AI just increases the scale. Look up the Cambridge Analytica stuff.

    • There are common techniques that can be used broadly to get results with LLMs.
    • Some source code is floating around out there, like it is mentioned in the article.
    • Yes, decompilation techniques are something that cannot be prevented and are sped up by LLMs.
    • There are only so many devs patching bugs, while there might be millions trying to break in - they mentioned the chaining of multiple "low"-priority bugs to escalate the severity, and if you need months to even get the really dangerous stuff fixed, it's a free-for-all bonanza as soon as those models hit the public, and these people don't even need to know anything about cybersecurity - Joe Shmoe can tell Mythos to "go hack Onedrive" and that's all that is needed from Joe Shmoe.
  • The slot that is currently in use is the slower one since it's only Type: x1. Depending on what you use the slot currently (such as an M.2 drive), you might wanna switch slots so you can take advantage of the speed; the x1 slot is completely adequate for 1gbps ethernet if you don't need more. Both slots are otherwise functionally the same, but make sure to look up in your mainboard documentation if there's any limitation if you use both slots or a specific hardware configuration (mine deactivated the second M.2 slot after changing from an 2600x to an 5950x for example)

  • Well, it might help with the behavioral issues which are attached to male puberty, maybe reducing bullying and sexual harassment. It could also be used to teach about female anatomy, a thematic complex that seems to be sorely lacking in the US in general.

Ok, end of sarcasm. Simply putting this thing there as a bad substitute for a real teacher is not even a bad joke. It is insulting towards both the students which deserve to be taught by someone they can relate to and who is invested in their growth, and it is insulting towards teachers by showing them that they are seen as nothing more than information dispensers.

Teaching is so much more; the most important lessons i learned in school weren't the information i was getting or the stuff i was asked on tests, but the continued impulses to make sure i think for myself, to be critical towards my surroundings, to make sure i don't just accept incoming information, but also making sure to see who is feeding me that information and WHY i get this information fed at all.

It was an inoculation against bad actors and propaganda. I know i am still not immune to it (noone is), but i often just realize why a specific piece was written, being able to read between the lines, without much effort. This is what is needed for a functioning democracy, and it is obvious that exactly this ability is under attack from all sides.

  • "If you don't care about yourself, noone else will".

I still struggle with that, but the advice itself is solid.

  • That thing would get vandalized, hacked and flashed back to a sexbot firmware in no time. Funnily enough, the improved fleshlights these things normally have can be bought standalone, so maybe even a hardware upgrade would have been in that abominations future.

  • Because they are great tools everywhere you can easily and by automated systems verify the correctness of their output, that's why they are so good at e.g. finding security issues - it's trivial to check if the LLM's output lead to remote code execution or privilege escalation.

Testcases for software in general are something that are rather boring work - i see no issue in offloading that. And even tho the amount of Devs that document their code has increased since the 80s, i'd prefer an LLM-annotated source over one without comments at all.

The LLM doesn't have to understand what it is doing to be effective - similar to the 10000 monkeys on typewriters writing everything that can be written given infinite time, but with a very much more educated guess than random gibberish.

They also enable natural language interfaces that are far more powerful than Alexa or Google Assistant ever were, they might be used in games for generating the lore and dialogue for all NPC in entire worlds (or even the entire world itself) by training small scale models with whatever information game writers want to provide as basis.

/// Edit here: This would also enable self-created worlds! Just create a tool to train a small model (probably available for a larger model as a tool) based on whatever lore dump you wanna provide, and then go explore that world with your own eyes!

There are many use cases for LLMs, and none of them have to be as wasteful and hostile as the crap the hyperscalers are currently pushing. Damn, if they would stop building datacenters and hoovering up every piece of silicon they can, prices for a GPU with enough VRAM to run 27b models would be trivial for the average costumer, and those can be very sophisticated if specialized. Also wouldn't need gas turbines for power, huge complexes that have no other possible usage, no evaporative cooling.

Second Edit: https://www.propublica.org/article/anthropic-mythos-microsoft-software-vulnerabilities displays how awesome these things are at finding vulnerabilities. Using LLMs to find security issues should be implemented regardless of personal stance towards LLM, to make sure we all have technology we can rely upon.

  • I have to agree with Linus tho. LLM's are a tool, and it's societies responsibility to use it well. Damning the tool because some people don't wield it correctly or misuse it wont help - the genie is out of the bottle, and even tho I am very sure OpenAI and Anthropic have no future because they are hemorrhaging cash from every possible spot, LLMs and specialized models for specific use cases wont disappear.

  • Anything but regulate guns, making mental health ressources more accessible or punish bullying.

This normalizes policing by machines, controlled by faceless people who will be shielded against consequences just like cops are shielded now. Drones don't have a face, a name or an personell number. If something happens (and it will), you can't even point your finger on the guilty party anymore. It also shields those controllers from any social backlash they would get if they would hurt someone in person.

  • Naah, would be wasted on him, send it to me instead, i make good use of it!

  • The banks wouldn't give them the credit needed without this. This is one of the signs of the bubble crumbling. The question isn't if the card house collapses, but when. We're all waiting for it. Currently the can still cover for each other, but that strategy only goes so far.

  • Let them all congregate in their New Zealand bunkers and then nuke the shit out of them. New Zealands sacrifice would be appreciated.

  • I'd like the new Dr Pepper Spider Bonanza please.

  • The average human will eat an average of eight spiders a year while asleep.

is false. 2 things about that are great: That it is false, and that i now know who circulated this bullshit lol
