Love Science Fiction, Cyberpunk, post-apocalyptic settings; Fan of the games of the defunct Arkane Studios. Listening to (Power-, Speed-, Thrash-)Metal, Gothic, Deathrock, EBM, Vaporwave, Lo-Fi; Classic and Musicals are fine too. Can't stand Hip-Hop.

Owned by two cats, recently divorced, blessed with a personality disorder (AVPD) - pensioned (even the state has the opinion I'm a total wreck lol). This causes me to be unable to keep up personal connections and makes me ghost literally everyone, so if it happens to you, sorry in advance.

  • Hearsay, hearsay and more hearsay. There is no proof that the tissue has been in water, but the inspecting physician has been very adamant that tissue being stored in water for YEARS, regardless of distilled or not, cannot show the blood cells in the sample, because they would have been washed out ages ago. This leaves 4 possibilities:

    • The people bringing in the sample were telling bullshit tales. This is by far the most probable reason.
    • Someone who has reason to make it appear like a miracle has messed with the samples, replacing them. This doesn't mean the people bringing the samples in don't think this is authentic, but without a 100% secured chain of custody it cannot be ruled out. There are people who would be able to make a lot of money out of something like this, so this is the second-most probable reason, and would give the people bringing the sample in additional authenticity because they really believe.
    • The physician made MULTIPLE errors while analyzing the sample. We can't rule this out, but if he is somewhat competent, this is very improbable
    • We see a miracle. As long as the chain of custody over the samples isn't 100% watertight, as it is in this case, this isn't even improbable, it is borderline impossible.

    Bring us irrefutable proof (hint: you won't be able to) that this sample hasn't been messed with in the years before it landed on that physicians desk.

  • My ISP uses fiber to local substations and then uses the cable network (copper-based) for providing service in the apartments - currently they are able to push 2Gbps down / 100Mbps up using these old-ass coaxial cables and in a densely populated area, which is pretty impressive if taking into account that the city started building that network in a public/private partnership, and originally just used for TV (even getting an upstream in those networks was pretty tricky IIRC and wasn't viable in the beginning) in the late 80s - my first connection from them was 300kbps, and that was blazing fast for the time!

    If it's traffic shaping, you might try to find out. I looked around, and you can either try using wireshark to see if something fishy is going on, or you might try https://github.com/marcelscode/glasnost , but that tool is pretty old and i don't know how reliable it is nowadays. At least it's java based, so it should run anyways.

    Edit: I just saw you mentioned that you were just using 20Mbps. There's no way that has any impact even when on a shared medium for other users in you area, so that theory can be canned.

  • I have to say i have, in my whole life, never heard of an residential ISP blocking a single port (at least if you don't live in china, russia or similarly run countries). If they have an issue with services you have running, they normally either contact you or disable the connection as a whole first and ask questions later. There are some shenanigans regarding traffic shaping tho (often used to annoy torrent users). Are you on a shared medium (a.k.a fiber to the curb)? In that case, if you generate loads of traffic, they might throttle - but in most cases not block - your connection, because it can cause an already overbooked line to generate issues in your local area; but this would persist even when changing ports.

    What i have encountered more often are consumer level routers that don't handle lots of connections at once well, causing them to freeze or drop traffic. My ISP provided cable modem / router (in my case in bridge mode so i can use my own router) freezes for a minute when starting torrents and not limiting the amount of connections created per second, and repeats the freezes every time the connection comes back and the torrent client continues to overload the router.

  • If you are suggesting that LLMs are sentient, then this isn't a "mild disagreement", it's the San Andreas fault.

    I am certain that LLMs are a step into the direction of AGI, but it's a small piece of the puzzle. There are so many technological leaps that have to happen before AGI can become real that I am certain that neither of us will see that day.

    If you have such an open mind, then please also read the paper they released, which is a lot more careful in how all of this is framed. This article is here to drive VC funding, not for scientific accuracy, and this is not the first time Anthropic has framed things in a sensationalist way that had no basis in the reality of the paper. (the blackmail-thing for example.)
