  • to me the reason I don't want a mouse is I need to move it on some surface for it to work, and even then it's handling is much less accurate than at the desk, and its a chore to target that little button on the screen. from this point keyboard based navigation would work better, in apps that implement it well. I can imagine using a keyboard, but most other people I know would not accept that, because it's too big.

    so far the best option I heard is a normal TV remote but with a keypad and trackpad on the back. but do those work with IR, are the signals of these buttons standardized?

  • I'm the former, but most of that I'm not doing by hand. jellyfin transcodes when it wants, I'm not dealing with that. resources are monitored, a simple setup, so that if something happens I can look back why it happened. I also want alerts if something is predictably going to break down soon. with the latter school of thought, you wouldn't know if a disk was throwing smart errors for half a year before completely breaking down. but I don't have failover, I don't have the hardware and don't want the power bill for that. but I have reverse proxy because then every web thing is configured the same predictable way, plus I trust it more to handle the standards well. so most things I do, I do it because I think it to be valuable to me, not just for the sake of doing it.

    homelabbing is the means to an end to me.

  • I generally like some things that syatemd gives, but is there an easier way to create timed automations with systemd timers?

    with cron, its just a single line with the recurrence pattern and the command. with systemd, you have to create a timer unit file with several lines, a service unit file with several lines, put them in the right directory, reload systemd, enable the timer. timers are not difficult, but much more convoluted than the crontab. if you have to make multiple pairs, or update something in them, it gets old fast.

  • my solution is smart TV with restricted VLAN. then it can use jellyfin or whatever I feel like. but I can't recommend that to the average joe, who does not even have any network equipment capable of restricting a port to a VLAN.

    Seriously. any recommendation that does not solve this problem is at most a tech demo. remote control, preferably without the fragile smartphone. and no airmouse, that's terrible even on my LG TV. hardware side it's simple, get an USB IR receiver, or use the HDMI-CEC signals coming from the TV. but there is nothing to tie it into the linux desktop.

    it has a few limitations, like google stores metadata (exif data) separately, so downloaded photos don't have them, there is another tool that puzzles it together automatically.but now that I read it, for more than a year now rclone is only allowed to download what it uploaded? what bullshit is that, google?
