  • To be clear, they published the rule to the federal register. If the I junctions are lifted, the rule will immediately go into effect. This has no immediate effect and hopefully never will.

  • This kind of model should be banned altogether. No company should be allowed to treat people like employees but pretend they are contractors to limit liability and responsibility to the employee. This model is only than a way to skirt labor laws.

  • I have been on the internet since 1993 and have always been disappointed that a subscription/donation model didn't beat out an ad-driven model. I wonder if this is going to push us towards a subscription/donation model as things move behind paywalls tplo protect against bots.

    I don't really want to pay subscription fees, but I am definitely tired of ads and being the product. I'd rather be sold a good product.

  • As someone else who works in ML but as a user for research purposes, I agree that there is no technical distinction but we're talking about public communications here. You and I both know that AI and ML are the same thing. Most people do not. If I talked with my mom about AI she would assume I mean generative AI. She wouldn't understand the nuance in your comment.

    In fact, even as a researcher who uses both simple ML techniques and generative AI, I tend to make the assumption that when someone mentions AI they mean generative AI.

    Common language changes based on the common understanding of society. The fact that the technical terms mean something different from the common understanding in society means that we need to be even more careful with the terms that we use, especially with something as polarizing as generative AI.

  • I wouldn't call that "doing a good job". If they were doing a good job, they would disambiguate Machine Learning from Generative AI. I don't know that they're doing this intentionally, but i would definitely appreciate that distinction being made.

  • I'd argue that it is a lot easier to inform the public when the campaign doesn't have to cover as much area and that it becomes more difficult to buy every race when there are more of them.

  • I kind fo agree and kind of don't. I agree in that parents should take accountability for their children. That said, social media has been shown to be addictive and kids are frequently ahead of their parents technologically. One thing that could help is an education campaign that teaches parents how to effectively monitor their kid's online activity. Parents need some help figuring out what tools to use and how to use them I think.

  • Thanks for the info, that's awesome! Based on the quality of the image, I'd guess this was a specialized camera designed to have a broader range of sensitivity. Do you know if that's right or did they just use a nice DSLR?

    Also, the first image has been corrected for rayleigh scattering, either algorithmically or artistically. The second image does not appear to have been corrected. It looks similar to what we get from geostationary satellites prior to performing rayleigh scattering correction.

  • You know, what I said was largely right but reading a few articles about the changes makes it apparent that your interpretation is also right.

    In Dec. 2025, Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent nixxed some of the quarter designs that were approved by then-Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen during the Biden Administration for focusing “on DEI and Critical Race Theory policies.” One of the coins featured a line of people with arms linked, in between the words “We shall overcome.”

    At the time, U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach said the coinage design is supposed to “celebrate American history and the founding of our great nation,” but that imagery was scrapped because “the Biden Administration and Secretary Yellen remained focused on DEI and Critical Race Theory policies.”

  • I want the democrats to put forward a good slate of candidates, have them discuss issues in a reasonable and informative way, then have us vote on our favorite. There are people whose jobs are to know who would make a good candidate. Most people, myself included, don't have enough information to say who should run. I do think that most people can name a few who they don't want to run and I think Kamala and Hilary are both high on most people's lists.

    Someone saying "please don't run Kamala" shouldn't mean they need to offer an alternative. That is the job of the democratic party.

    Edit: Not only was he nominated, he was confirmed in December and is CURRENTLY the US Ambassador to South Africa.

    In 1987, Bozell and the NCPAC joined a coalition of groups opposed to the Reagan administration meeting with the president of the African National Congress, the leading anti-apartheid group in South Africa. Bozell wrote that he was "proud to become a member of the Coalition Against ANC Terrorism." In 2013 Bozell complained on Twitter that the mainstream media "mythologizes" the late anti-apartheid leader and first president of a post-apartheid South Africa, Nelson Mandela.[5]

    1. A quick search brings up nothing with ICE and "warheads" so it doesn't appear to be "widely reported". Can you give evidence for your claims?
    2. I didn't say that the article is making unsubstantiated claims. I said that you are. The article is substantiated, it just isn't all that surprising that ICE is spending more on weaponry as they hire more agents.
    3. The story says nothing about slush funds or anything beyond ICE spending more on weaponry.
    4. You are posting in a public forum. That is explicitly asking for conversation and feedback, even if you didn't directly ask me for mine. If you don't want people to respond, don't post.
