  • In the depth of pandemic lockdown, after my roommate moved out to return closer to family, I was in my house alone for a month straight. One day I hear the tea kettle whistling on the stove.

It was the middle of summer, I hadn't made tea in weeks. Maybe I bumped the stove control? But there shouldn't have been any water in the kettle. And I hadn't been in my kitchen for over an hour and it wouldn't have taken that long for the water to boil had I put it on and just forgotten about it somehow. I keep my doors locked.

Idk, the only thing I can think of is the isolation really got to me that day, I put the kettle on and completely forgot I had done it five minutes later.

  • My extremely progressive by American farmer standards uncle, who has driven a Prius for non-farm travel for over a decade, would probably stare at this article silently, turn, and walk out to the barn to continue working. Just about the harshest response that man ever gives.

  • Wholesome one this time.

I played a club sport in college. Nothing fancy and I was a fine but not top-of-the-roster player. Several of us rode the city bus to practice every day.

There was often a woman on the same bus as us. She obviously had some mental and physical challenges. She would chat with other passengers at times, and eventually figured out many of us were teammates. She started getting into it, asking us who was the best player and if we were going to win "the big game". (There was no "big game" ever upcoming, it was just a question she associated with sports and asked frequently). One time she brought her autograph book and asked us all to sign it.

When we did finally play in a "big game", it got posted on YT. So I showed her a bit the next time we were on the bus together. She was pretty excited and asked for another round of autographs now that we were TV famous.

She never came to a game, I think a disruption like that to her routine might have been really hard on her, but it was fun having such a non-judgemental, joyous fan.

  • "Post less" isn't going to help a platform that's still in early days that needs more active posters.

Best I can think of with a 30 second investment of time and thought is:

    1. when you post about your perspective/experience, post knowing it is only your perspective. You speak for no one else.
    2. when other people post with perspectives that differ from yours, default to believing them

(I also feel like these two cover not just blackness, but women and LGBT+ and even white men who don't have the same perspectives as the majority on this white-and-western platform)

Edit: In response to the four guidelines:

Listen more to more Black people

Sounds good but I don't see how this works in practice here. Anyone claiming to be black on an anonymous platform is 50/50 or more likely to be not black. Reddit had an entire "as a black man" sub making fun of people posing as black and the same problem will exist here.

Post less – and think before you post

See above, not what fediverse needs.

Call in, call out, and/or report anti-Blackness when you see it

    For sure.

Support Black people and Black-led instances and projects

I have literally never seen an instance identified as black-led, so not sure who to be supporting. It also seems like it would have a similar problem to a topic that starts getting a bit niche. Like, a movie community will do fine, get more niche to a horror movie community and momentum dies out quickly. Horror aficionados are best off posting to the movie community and non-horror people can deal with the occasional post that doesn't inspire them.

Post something to the movie community about black actors and directors in the horror film industry, or about black characters, or about a horror story that is built on (or appropriated from) a black story, hell yeah, I'm in. Don't spin it off to a different community or instance because most will never see it.

  • A neighbor saw me walking barefoot to my mailbox and complimented me on my healthy feet.

Hackles went up thinking he was some foot fetishist who was going to get weird on me. Nope, just a medical person of some sort that works with feet a lot and I genuinely have healthy arches and mobile toes. At least I choose to believe that explanation he gave. Otherwise, I have to assume my neighbor is jerking it every time I walk outside.
