  • Yeah, I've had two jobs in Mac environments while running a Windows or Windows and Linux at home. When I'm tired is the time I make the most goofs, which is usually around the time I should get off computers for the day and touch some grass.

Interesting that track pad and mouse are specific annoyances for you. You don't have to use an Apple mouse with an Apple computer, you can use other brands with a more robust scroll wheel.

  • But who is the No Ears book about? ST characters have huge ears, no ears must be a juicy autobiography.

  • Depends on context, as always. A user sharing a story on social interaction, gender may be quite important to how they experienced it and how others perceive it. I.e., a post the other day asking about worst dates and the average worst date for men was a woman on coke or a no show. The average worst date for women was about getting sexually assaulted or raped.

Men are victims of those things too and can face different repercussions when they try to pursue help. Understanding their experiences within the context of them being men is also important.

Stripping gender from these stories only obfuscates some of the problems.

  • If discussing 1:100 there is no individual attention, so why not 1:1,000 or 1:100,000 or just YouTube videos one can watch at their own pace.

In my college lectures of 1:200, there were still separate sessions of 20 students or fewer, led by grad students working for the professor, to offer more individualized help. If that doesn't happen and it's just a lecturer talking to a crowd, the ratio is irrelevant.

    0/10

  • I read about and liked the concept of the Fediverse, opened a few accounts across various platforms, quickly got bored with the small userbase. Then reddit did their thing with the API, I wanted to stop using it entirely, and enough people also migrated to Lemmy at the same time that this is now a level of users and activity to hold my interest.

  • Do you just do CAD though? Our Mech Es do a lot in CAD but not solely. Even our drafters do a lot of things not in CAD. If anyone ever asked me what I do for work, "CAD" would not be my answer.

I categorize it as a tool, not a job. And personally, I would find a job that is, say, 75% or more CAD to be boring as hell.

  • I was at my company's booth at a career fair earlier this week and it felt like every other student was looking for an internship in "machine learning". When I asked follow up questions about what sort of experience they'd had or projects done or what they wanted to do with it in their career, crickets.

To be fair, 2nd most popular was "CAD" which is also not a job.

  • They always look good. Normal day levels of makeup looks great. Special event extra fine makeup looks great. Morning face with no makeup looks great. I just like their face.

  • Similar, I had one declare rivers flow towards the equator. Which is slightly better than claiming they all flow N to S, but still inaccurate.

Rivers flow downhill. That's it. In case anyone else needs to check their mental model of the world.

  • Was each time a different religious organization and did they require a baptism into their religion specifically?

I was raised and baptized into one flavor of Christian. They taught baptism in any other flavor of Christian was all good, no need to be baptized again to switch churches though the pastor might want to say an extra conversion prayer.

  • RSS feeder pulling articles from sources of my choosing, mostly primary sources like AP and Reuters.

I subscribe to podcasts for opinion and commentary on that news, and just find stuff that mostly aligns with my values and philosophies.

  • Woman, not girl. I'm an adult and expect to be treated as such.

I feel no pressure to respond to aggression with physical violence. I recently sat through two friends (men) talking about how they feel too old to fight but if a strange guy were to roll up to them under certain conditions, they would have "no choice" but to physically fight them. I have never felt the need to physically fight a woman who disagreed with me. I would consider it a win and a good reflection on me if I could deescalate or remove myself from the situation.

Most other things I can think of are a double edged sword. Like being seen as a "girl" instead of a fully functioning, self-sufficient woman is usually a negative, but I can twist it in my favor to avoid things sometimes. I see other people commenting about women being able to interact with children without being seen as a potential pedophile, but that only comes because society expects women to do all the child-carrying.

  • I don't have trouble explaining. I keep it high level and generic because 99 times out of 100, people are just making small talk and want to know just enough about you to categorize you.

  • I like the various mythologies for psychopomps; Anubis, Charon, grim reapers, Azrael, Vanth, valkyries, etc.

  • I throw them in a box and never use them again. My USB cable box is a rats nest of at least a hundred cables. Why? Because I might need them some day. Even those stupid mini-Bs and UC-E6 for cameras that broke a decade ago. No labels necessary, just procrastination.

  • I'm not entirely sold on the argument I lay out here, but this is where I would start were I to defend using chatGPT in school as they laid out in their experiment.

It's a tool. Just like a calculator. If a kid learns and does all their homework with a calculator, then suddenly it's taken away for a test, of course they will do poorly. Contrary to what we were warned about as kids though, each of us does carry a calculator around in our pocket at nearly all times.

We're not far off from having an AI assistant with us 24/7 is feasible. Why not teach kids to use the tools they will have in their pocket for the rest of their lives?
