It's time to Escape From Reality! :3

  • Anubis - an anti-scraping plugin for websites. I believe one of its claims to fame is placing LLM crawlers into "tar pits" (preventing them from eating website resources)

It does show up whenever you load into the site though, so I guess that makes their mascot stick in everyone's head.

  • You're probably not the gaming type, I presume.

  • Holy Calvinball.

  • Depends on the fork. The MPL largely allows the forks to do as they please, so feel free to check their blog posts and patch notes for reference.

  • ... You do realize that security patches are upstreamed, correct? These forks just don't include the ads, AI, or built-in VPN.

  • Firefox Forks (Waterfox/Librewolf/Ironfox) my beloved

  • Due to different purchasing power and average incomes between countries, online stores will usually apply regional pricing so people can afford to buy software (because if they don't people will just pirate). However platforms like steam have the unfortunate problem where because you can gift and trade game keys, items from your steam inventory, etc... there have been cases where people will tunnel with a VPN to a nation with favorable currency exchanges/low regional prices, and buy things there despite not living in the area or having the same purchasing power.

To prevent this, platforms will prevent users from paying in currencies other than what their "home" location is, especially online (I think valve even locks games in CIS nations that make them unable to be gifted or played outside the territory).

  • It's infamously hard to invest in non-state-controlled assets in China - that's one of the reasons why their domestic real estate industry became used as a financial asset more than housing; it was somewhat independent from government control.

In contrast, the USD largely has no regulations on how much capital enters or leaves the country, and private assets in places such as the New York Stock Exchange aren't going to be seized by federal authorities on a whim.

The mega wealthy of China already have to jump through many hoops to move their fortunes outside of the nation to places where they can properly invest without CCP oversight, so if one day their currency did become financialized similar to the USD and was allow to flow without restrictions, the outflow would be immense and likely very damaging to their domestic economy.

  • Other than the GBP and the Yen, it's one of the most financialized currencies that is often used as "the intermediary" for conversions into other currencies and for international transactions. You'll always have someone who will be willing to take your USD off you in exchange for product or another currency.

There are probably other alternatives (like the Euro and GBP) that could be used by these nations, but I'd imagine the USD has the least restrictions and the widest reach compared to each.

(This is also why the Yuan can't replace the dollar, China places a lot of measures to restrict outflow of their currency to prevent capital flight)

  • Some instances disable downvotes for this reason (so when using a client only upvotes are used).

You can also use the scaled filter to see more niche things that may have been buried otherwise.

  • Even FOSS software? The Linux Foundation's headquartered in the US.

I do get the rationale, but honestly you could just change that to "proprietary software" and you'd have more options with just as much data security.

  • I wonder if FEX (Valve's X86 to ARM conversion software) could run this now on an android phone. The game's freely distributed on PC, so it should be easy to test.

  • Regional pricing rates. Argentina has similar woes.

  • The public media episode collab with John Oliver was pretty awesome ngl, raised a lot of money for local public radio stations :)

  • Fixed my Valve Index :)

  • DuckDuckGo uses a basket of search indexes excluding google - so even if one of them enshittifies they can reallocate that portion to another source.

  • Grayjay's kind of nice for that since it aggregates results from all platforms in a search - sometimes missing youtube videos (or stuff that got DMCA'd) can be found in peertube instead.

Nebula also works on it as well.

  • Snowden was in 2013, bro.

Use a client for video content like Grayjay (gets rid of the ads too).

Look at Tuta Mail or Proton Mail as viable privacy focused alternatives.
