  • The Great Panic in World War Z was when the public realized there was no cure and the rabies vaccine developed did nothing against the infection. Another chapter mentions a border guard who remembered how "[travelers] gave me a look that said money wasn't going to be good for much longer."

    In that moment I doubt their paychecks were on their mind.

  • That's actually part of a whole chapter in World War Z. A mercenary from the rich people's resort who later ditched them reveals that once the common people started showing up to their door rather than zombies, an immediate fight broke out between all of the residents and their staff, with most of them killing each other. The mercenaries refused to intervene because they were hired to kill infected, not normal people, and had no loyalty to the rich residents.

    The whole thing was broadcast live because the owner of the resort wanted to flaunt their status during the great panic.

  • Crazy to think the best place to be in a major crisis is to stay put with your family and the local people you have common ground with rather than randos who just try to solve their problems with isolated wealth, huh?

    (There's nuance to that, of course. If everyone in your town has to evacuate, go with them.)

  • DRM-Free files that the user can archive on their own media, in their own format, as they wish.

    The ability to distribute media without shipping physical goods allows for much smaller productions to have wide releases and in some cases to make their games cheaper than otherwise required (cough, switch tax). The issue is the DRM preventing the user from making their own backups, rather than the physical product (although steam does allow you to make backups and copies of your library folder which is cool).

  • It's on an instance/community basis dude, and everything is community hosted and not centralized.

    Sometimes, it's better to find another comm that suits the atmosphere you prefer. If an accidental automod flagged you, appeal it, since it's a human on the other end of review and not a corpo employee. People get overwhelmed, so they need a bot janitor to sometimes clean up messes.

  • Not to ridicule your prior decisions, but it's been obvious since at least the xb360 days that gaming on a locked platform (console ecosystem) would always lead to the revocation of ownership and the inability to do what you wish with your own hardware and games (unless you modded them, and I recommend modding your old consoles if you still have them).

    There is no future for true game ownership on a locked platform. Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft understand this quite well, which is why you are lured in to a walled garden with the cheaper "cost of entry", and have no true exit that lets you keep your stuff as they gouge you further and further.

  • I mean it might just shift to services like GOG. I use Bandcamp for music and don't buy physical CDs anymore because the files are DRM-free and easy to archive. Same with GOG for games I own on it.

    Now, Rockstar is definitely not doing a DRM-free release though. Hopefully a cracked version circulates eventually.
