  • Keiko would make a good chef, I think. She has experience with different kinds of cuisine.

    Of course, she may not personally enjoy cooking some things, like a traditional Irish breakfast... But she would still make it taste good for the people who do like it (while constantly trying to get them to try literally anything else that's healthy)

    And neelix knows how to be serious when it's needed. He would enjoy slam poetry and baking classes in an out-of-the-way area, but the moment the red alert is sounded, he's ready to go with a phaser in hand, and memories of the war.

    I'll pass on The Sisko being my enemy. I do not want him to be my enemy. I choose life. He can live with it

  • One day at work, I found out a work friend actually believed the whole "crystal energy" thing.

    Since she was the first person I had ever met who actually admitted to that, I wanted to know more about what her specific beliefs about them were.

    At first she was super bubbly about it, on par with her personality. But then as I asked a couple common sense questions about why science doesnt find anything measurable, and first she got hostile and mad that I would dare question another person's beliefs, but when I explained I was genuinely curious and had no interest in changing her beliefs she just kind of broke down because nobody ever takes her seriously or believes her about her "personal healing journey"

    The way I see it, it's for adults who like pretty rocks, but can't come to terms with the fact that they like something "childish" (because for some reason a lot of adults call a rock collection cringe or childish or dumb, but clearly they've never met a geologist) so instead of having a pretty rock and mineral collection, they have "healing crystals", and eventually it just becomes kind of like part of their identity the way a religion is.

    I will however, 100% giggle at their expense with my wife, later. Because anyone who buys $50 polished selenite drink coaster "charging plate", and a $200 brass pyramid to "recharge" their $50 "healing quartz wand" while refusing to listen to real science deserves to be giggled at.

  • Weird, I've literally always heard "ignorance of the law is no excuse to break the law", which seems to imply criminal intent doesn't matter. Only that the action that was take was illegal.

  • Yeah, I've never once seen anything but criticism over the US's involvement in the middle east.

    The most I've seen is a couple people saying the equivalent of "well SOMEONE had to do something about X" And a bunch of others jumping on them to clarify that X either never existed, or was massively exaggerated and the US isn't the World Police.

    Genuinely would love to see someone link a good faith comment trying to argue the above, so I can tell them all about how they're a fucknut

  • Can you truly say you've had the HB experience if you haven't recieved emoji/sticker/gif spam from people who weren't alive for 9/11, have never been outside their country, and refuse to listen to opposing views, but know with full certainty that all western countries are 100% full of genociders and colonial rapists who all deserve the glorious death the super benign, extremely peaceful and misunderstood countries of North Korea, China, and Russia who have never once been correctly accused of human rights violations....

    And of course, if they point out that your country has dipped into those things in the past, well your entire worldview is shattered and their whataboutism has solved everything and proves you deserve the death they crave for you.

  • Sometimes I just can't bring myself to be the bad guy, because either you get the worst possible ending (sorry, can't suspend my disbelief enough to believe bad people actually get bad ends) or it just goes over the top.

    For instance, in one franchise you can be bad, but it's mostly rude comments, insults, maybe a couple betrayals here and there.... Then BOOM surprise you just shot a kid in the back of the head.

    I'm all for being a bad guy but it has to be a well-written and iltelligent bad guy that actually rivals the good version, not just stupidly plodding through the worst possible choice "because a bad guy wouldn't care that he just crippled his fleet and lost the final battle, because he got mad that one of the admirals called him a hothead and crashed his ship into theirs"

    Who am I kidding, the moment I betray someone I like, I'm going to bail and go back to being a good guy

  • I think any Vulcan would agree. It just makes sense to mirror the energy of your counterparts at a gathering. Even if you don't understand why they're doing something, you participating includes you in things. Being passive and externally emotionless sets you apart as "other". Being vulcans, they would likely desire to know why, and would do their research.

    I imagine alien-facing industries would have a whole section of their organization dedicated to studying alien socialization so they can be ready at interspecies functions.

    Anything less would be illogical.

    Now the real question is whether these vulcans who mix "too heavily" will end up becoming "less Vulcan-y" over time, or if other vulcans would treat them differently by default just because they're "tainted". We've seen how.... Particular.... Vulcans can be about the slightest divergence from "standard".

  • People often ask me if I'm pissed off or if everything is okay if they catch me unawares.

    Like no I just didn't see you there and couldn't get my face ready in time.

    My wife has several immediate and extended family members on the spectrum and she still tells me things like "I don't know why you say you don't like parties, you did great and looked like you had a fantastic time"

    Apparently "you were all SUPPOSED to think that" is not the correct response.

  • I have a friend who works at a bank, and when he was a teller there was a guy who would come in every friday and exchange 500 in dollar coins of varying types, the little brass colored ones here, the silver looking ones, and also 50 cent pieces.

    They didn't carry that much at any time because nobody really brings them in so they had to start special ordering them for this one guy. Every week.

    No idea what he uses them for, but either he's got a shitload of them, or he makes it hail at strip clubs.

  • That's a good one, and I can't wait to see it again since I'm going through the shows with my wife (her first viewing of any of them)

    The doctor beaming down for "just a minute" and being there for some ridiculous amount of time, I can't remember exactly how long.

  • My wife likes TNG and Lower Decks, I'm still easing her in to DS9 and Voy.

    The other day I showed her a picture of Picard wearing a yellow uniform, and she said "he's wearing the wrong uniform. He's command, not engineering." before I could even ask her what was wrong with the Pic.

    I immediately yelled "YOU'RE FINALLY A NERD!" And shot a text to the family text group and our friend group to share the good news, everyone had a good chuckle, and she just goes "YOU MADE ME THIS WAY! Not that I'm complaining...."

    I have successfully made a convert. And yesterday she actually asked to watch more Voy before she even got home from work.

  • My wife actually love BBT and got me watching it. I still hate laugh track sitcoms, and as a Super Nerd a lot of things irritated me, but overall it's not nearly as bad as I was expecting from all the meme hate.

    Still, the meme is not wrong, Data had a fine positronic brain, sure, but He can kill a motherfucker when necessary.
