  • Thanks for the links, will check them all out. But from a brief squizz at the bbc link... can I just point out that these are all VERY established artists, with established fanbases. None of these will be interacting with people online anyway, already using a social media manager to do all their posts etc.

    There's no point making music that nobody knows exist, and unfortunately streaming / social media are the main avenues for reaching new fans these days.

  • I write a few different styles, been writing big beat for a couple of years now and trying to do it as independently as possible. But still needs promoting online, hence social media ugh.

  • FR. These features are so easy to disable, when I updated Firefox recently it asked me on next load if I want the features or not... I chose not, no big deal!

    'AI' is this generations Justin Bieber / Skrillex. There's plenty to criticise but it's becoming a bandwagon at this point.

  • Yeah. People can avoid all this nonsense by installing one simple app... Duck duck go browser.

    You don't have to use the browser. It just sits in the background quietly blocking tracking requests from other apps.

    It's absolutely horrifying on first use to see how egregious tracking is.

    • If I see a freezer / fridge door open in a supermarket, I close it. Not for the supermarket, but for the planet
    • as someone who stacked shelves as a teen, if I take an item and it leaves a gap, I pull the next one forward so the employee doesn't have to keep fussing over the manager's demand for it to be lined up
    • my dad lives in a bungalow, on a small cul de sac of other bungalows. Sheltered housing for old folks. Litter often gets blown in and collects, I'll pick it up every couple of weeks. Also cleared their paths / sprinkled salt when It snowed
    • when old people are in the way, I don't crowd up behind them. I'll take a few steps back and wait so they don't feel pressured
    • if there's an item in the road that could damage someone's car, I'll wait until it's safe then remove the item
    • if I see someone was down voted just for sharing their opinion (assumedly because the down voter is too childish to withstand an opposing opinion), I make sure to up vote it in an attempt to restore balance. Even if I don't agree with said opinion (obviously this doesn't apply to hateful rhetoric etc)

  • For years I was adamant that I didn't like ambient, I think because I'd only been exposed to very boring drone stuff. Then I discovered Solar Fields / Carbon Based Lifeforms and it changed my musical world.

    I'm quite horrible at self-promo so sadly it's just gathering digital dust, but after 20+ years of writing dance music for myself and others, I decided to get heavily into writing ambient / chill. Made a load of trippy animation videos and setup a youtube... if you love Solar Fields, without meaning to sound bigheaded I think you'd enjoy them.

  • I love anything by Solar Fields for tasks requiring concentrating, it's especially good for reading scifi.

    Whenever he releases a new album though I have to listen to it a few times, before I can have it on in the background... It's very beautiful and intricate.

  • Off topic, i just learned that some people hear a voice in their head when they’re thinking or reading.

    I don't think that's off topic, it sounds as if you don't have an internal voice which is the audio-form of aphantasia. My inner monologue is ever-present, and often takes the voice of whoever I've been talking to recently, especially if I've been bingeing a series or just watched a film. Having Morgan Freeman as my inner narrator was awesome, but as you can prob guess it's a curse as often as it's a blessing. When I get an earworm it can last for days.

    It is hard trying to imagine the absence of something that you have. Like trying to think up a new colour.

  • Surprise, the game company which does next to fuck all to stop predators grooming kids on their app... turns out they were also up to no good.

    My niece was groomed on roblox aged 10 by a Russian man. From what I gather, she's just one of many to have been abused through this game.

  • 'Thich Nhat Hanh - Heart of the Buddah's Teachings'. I didn't become a Buddhist, but it gave me some really useful mental tools to be happier.

    I had a bit of a fucked up childhood, left home at 15, was really angry & bitter for a while. I was already many years into a general attempt to let go and be happier, I believe the knowledge from that book has made me happier and more resilient.
