  • When I recently reentered the country this year there literally was no security process other than scanning my face and my passport at an automated thing. After that, it was just walk on through. No talking with any agents, no search of my carry on bags (at least until going through TSA to fly domestically).

    I think people’s checked baggage was heavily scrutinized and scanned, but not any carry on. It was honestly kind of crazy. Like what if I had come from a country with virtually no exit security, and then was not flying domestically after that? I feel it would have been quite easy to smuggle things into the country in that case. Meanwhile they occasionally freak out and force people to let them search their phone? It makes little sense to me

  • Sergio Furnari, originally from Italy, had hoped the statue of the deceased far-right activist, which he intends to display in Times Square, would raise “millions” of dollars. Instead, he said he has been inundated by messages from people saying they intend to urinate on the sculpture.

    To add injury to insult, Furnari recently broke his foot working on the statue, after tripping over a roll of tape in his studio.

    “Is it cursed? Maybe. I don’t know,” he told the Guardian.

  • In the DR, especially in Santo Domingo, there are a lot of Norfolk Island Pine trees / Araucaria. They are the only conifers that can exist there at sea level, so they look super out of place surrounded mostly by palm trees and other tropical plants

    They look exactly like the fake cell phone tower trees (photo below of them somewhere else), but they are actually real. Really threw me for a loop seeing them when I was there

  • Mechanics are expensive, but buying enough equipment to do any kind of major job is even moreso. Not to mention the cost of trying to do complicated jobs without technical expertise, which could cost you a lot if you make a mistake.

    Im all for doing work myself when its within reason and doesnt require much in the way of specialized tools. But theres more than a few reasons that mechanics cost a lot of money. Expertise is expensive, labor is expensive, equipment is expensive, etc. Some things are best left to professionals. Unfortunately we are long past the time of cars that are truly simple for the average person to maintain or learn to do work on

  • Its important to remember that human bodies are effectively an environment unto themselves, and that there really isnt a distinct “you” and then other things like this.

    For example, there are trillions upon trillions more cells of bacteria on/in you than there are human cells. Every person’s overall existence is composed primarily of stuff that isnt technically “you”, although it is inseparable from you. While people’s bodily ecology can be modified, you couldnt possibly remove every quasi-foreign substance from yourself and still survive.

    Its part of why seemingly horrific stuff like fecal transplants can be very helpful. If youve cultivated a very mean ecology for one reason or another then resetting that to a healthier state is essential. Its like the gut version of you being a country suffering from unrest. But even though we think of negative or positive bacteria as being totally distinct from us, we are strongly defined by those bacteria. It affects your brain and emotions far more than most people realize. Scientists are still just beginning to understand the complexities of these systems, too.

    These little dudes I would assume are a similar situation. They probably have some form of essential symbiosis with us that we may not even understand yet. Killing them off would likely be bad. And even if you did, you would be creating a vacuum that could be filled by something worse. Our bodies are fertile ground for such tiny individuals. Better to have benign ones or helpful ones than it is to have bad ones

    If you let them sit in the dryer too long or put them in a drawer they will have creases

  • Really I feel this is mostly about the UK avoiding all the issues its has with what it did to the Chagossians, and the expenses of dealing with islands that will be massively impacted by climate change.

    To analogize, the UK stole someone else’s car and has had it for a while. But now the original car owner is trying to get it back, the engine is failing, and the practical choice is to offload it to someone else for a quick buck before shit hits the fan

  • Its amazing that since then we haven’t had much success in even landing anything unmanned on the moon, let alone manned. The fact that they weren’t ripped to shreds like most other things weve ever tried to land, using that era’s technology, is absolutely fucking bonkers

    E: Im assuming someone downvoted this bc they think Im saying this as in “the moon landing was fake” or something, which is not the case. Its just incredibly difficult to land something on the moon successfully, even with all the modern technology that we have. Resilience (2025), Hakuto-R (2023), Luna 25 (2023), and Beresheet (2019) all crashed in attempts to land on the moon using modern sensors and flight equipment that have infinitely more capability than what the US used to put men on the moon. The Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC) used a 1.024 MHz processor, 2 KB of RAM, and 72 KB of read-only memory. You would need 4,000,000 times more RAM to simply play kerbal space program.

    I dont believe the moon landing was faked whatsoever. Russia was watching every step of the way and would have happily pointed out if it had never happened. This was the height of the cold war. But instead they congratulated the US on its achievements. That said, its fucking insane that we were able to do it. Modern equipment has a less than 50% chance of landing safely, the odds of them being successful back then were infinitesimally smaller

Although its possible the current leadership runs itself out of resources to wield the big stick against a large enough coalition of other countries.
