  • It depends on the rest of your setup, but I recommend going with zigbee or matter/thread for the connectivity. I definitely wouldn't put any "smart" devices on my general purpose wifi. That stuff is never going to be secure. Also, consider if smart switches would work for you instead. That way you don't have to pay the premium when a bulb burns out.

  • If you have root access to the system, then you can enter any date you wish. That's not exactly a per-app or per-request prompt, but there is nothing preventing you from using whatever date you want. The only situation where this is going to matter is when an adult manages a computer for a minor and wants them to be age restricted.

    I get the "boiling a frog" arguments against this. It does feel like a first step towards gating the Internet behind government ID. However, if this were to forever be the way things work, I don't see a problem.

    I'm also not sure how resistance from the Linux community on this law will do anything to prevent future authoritarian overreach. It could do more to keep us marginalized, which will make us even less capable of standing up to the next phase.

  • That's not correct. What you need for long distance is high voltage, and it's easier/cheaper to step up/down AC voltage than DC. If conversion costs were eliminated, DC is actually more efficient.

    If you get to even longer distances of over 300+ miles, DC's efficiency becomes worth the additional cost of conversion. There are many HVDC interregional connections.

  • But there are an estimated 100-400 billion stars in the Milky Way, some of which are hundreds of solar masses, not to mention the Accretion disks of black holes all kicking out radiation. That's gotta add up to something, even with the inverse-square law fall off. The galactic core has unfathomable levels of radiation and puts out its own galactic wind, and some stars have observable bow shocks with it.

  • I solved that for most of them by going AMD with my last upgrade. No more binary drivers solved most of my issues. All that's left is really the anti-cheat kernel garbage. For that I just decided fuck it. I found it easier to stomach changing some gaming preferences than the Microsoft ecosystem.
