  • How do you find the best products to buy for everything?

  • NYT Wirecutter is good, though they don't fully respect money and like to recommend stuff with crazy pricetags. Consumer reports has limited products but deep data. For kitchenware, cult flav and prudent reviews rock. America's test kitchen is decent too.

    For random crap not listed on any of the above I just Google "best X". Click the top few articles and reddit threads. Specialty subreddits (like for vacuums) where they exist and buy it for life are especially valuable. Look for the things that get recommended by multiple sources and good reviews on online storefronts. For some product categories video reviews can reveal things written ones can't.

    Also remember the rule on how many things you look at. I'm sure I'm butchering the details, but a study was done a while back that showed people got the most valuable ratio of time invested to quality of purchase when they researched something like 60% of options. By this point you typically have a decent idea of what is and isn't good and can make an educated decision without digging deep on every possible option. I typically narrow down to a top few options pretty quickly and only dig deep on those.

    Edit: Also, consider your friend group. If you have a friend who you know often does deep research in their shopping and/or is deep in the specific world you're shopping for, shoot them a text. I've saved many hours of research consulting with friends who already did the research. And if the product category is a hobby of theirs they are often ecstatic to spend time with you teaching and offering personalized recommendations.

  • +1 for audiobookshelf, after using tools like Plex for a long time I was honestly shocked by how much more user friendly it felt. And it's a one man team! The only significant demerit is that the IOS app is stuck in test flight limbo, so you have to find another player. Though most do that already I think.

  • When content is low quality, posted to the wrong community (usually intentionally), trolls. Basically anything that I feel shouldn't exist. The content that I believe takes value from people's lives instead of adding it. If I find content that I dislike but believe adds value to other people, well that's what the block/ban features are for.

  • Right now, until next month's mortgage payment comes due. Every time I get something in the emergency fund either an emergency happens or a maintenance that will be an emergency if ignored. Just ordered a new set of car tires about an hour ago, as it happens.

  • Depends on the source and the weight of the claim. My fattest friend tells me the new Italian place slaps? Fact. The smartest person I know tells me there's a newly discovered planet? Worth looking into if it comes from them, but I'm skeptical.

  • I was fortunate enough to get invited to a ballroom dancing class in high school and fell in love with it. It's exercise and a social experience all in one fairly affordable package. Where I live an hour long group class is $10 a head. I wouldn't do private lessons for these purposes. And if you like it, there are so many subcultures! There are entire groups dedicated to certain dances like West Coast swing and Argentine tango. Regular social dances on the weekends in addition to classes. YMMV based on where you live, but dancing with the stars has brought ballroom into the mainstream and there are quality studios in most decent sized US cities as far as I know.

  • Journal. Then a sappy romance anime until I feel better. If it's a consistent issue and not just a bad week there is no substitute for therapy.

  • I use the tiller extension in Google sheets. With the community savings budget template to allow for 0 based or "envelope" budgeting. One of the few things in my life so far ahead of every other option I couldn't bring myself to ditch it and selfhost.

  • Definitely need remote access, and tunneling in every time I want to sync my notes app is way too much work. I've containerized these services as a security layer and you need user creds to access anything without an exploit. I'm comfortable with that level of risk.

    Dynamic DNS is a very cool thing I didn't know exists. I'll definitely look into it further! But for the time being I still need a fix for my problem.
