    I think Sanderson would be the first person to admit he didn’t do Mat justice. He’s spoken before about how difficult it was to write Mat.

    Definitely give him a shot as an author. I think he’s brilliant, and he has SO. MANY. BOOKS. 😁

  • Wheel of Time was my favorite series, until Stormlight Archive.

    He does characters quite well. The dialogue isn’t always there, especially if the character is supposed to have a clever wit like Mat, but he’s getting better at that, too, with practice. But in terms of depth of character and setting he’s pretty fantastic. His characters are flawed and relatable and feel real, wound very well into his mastery of story structure. In Wheel of Time Androl is an excellent example, as that character was almost entirely Sanderson’s.

    I recommend starting with either The Final Empire (first book in the Mistborn series) or The Way of Kings (first in the Stormlight series). The series eventually begin to intertwine and crossover to one another in a really brilliant way.

  • Have you read any Brandon Sanderson other than the last three WoT books? He’s a pretty amazing worldbuilder. And his hard magic systems are phenomenal. He’s also a master of story structure. The only area he lacks is prose, but he’s been improving on that over time.

    Politics is not two-dimensional. Don’t get me wrong, she’s acting like a piece of utter shit in her treatment of trans people. But to assume all of her other beliefs because of that one is a fallacy. Would I rather the people of Ohio have a viable progressive candidate? 100%. But they don’t, because

    The more I think on it, the only move that plays to win is putting in the effort to organize around a grassroots progressive as a write-in.

    In a first-past-the-post system, all this move does is guarantee that the more conservative major candidate wins. This is called the spoiler effect. By removing support from the major candidate who is more aligned with your views, you are voting against your own interests, because it effectively improves the position of the major candidate who is less aligned with your views. There is not a vote total a candidate needs to win, they just need more votes than the other candidates.

    I absolutely despise our voting system, but despising it doesn’t mean it goes away. Until we move to a ranked choice system or something similar, it is practically always a losing move to abandon the lesser of two evils. In our shitty system, Vote aggressively for progressive candidates in primaries, and then vote defensively for the least regressive major candidate in the general. Until we do that, or until we get rid of our godawful system, the Republicans will keep winning. Because they understand this. You may have heard the phrase, “Democrats fall in love, Republicans fall in line.”

    Putting the best construction on it, I suspect it wasn’t a lie but rather a misguided attempt to distinguish between his PhD and his medical degree. As in, he is a doctor of medicine and a doctor of epidemiology. One might say “physician and doctor” or something.

    But people took umbrage with the use of “physician,” which implies actual practice and licensure, so he stopped using it.

    Calling it “lying” adds a level of dishonesty that I’m not sure is warranted. But that’s just me, you do you.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't someone who graduated from medical school a doctor? You just can't practice without supervision until you go through residency, right? But like, someone on their first day of residency is still a "doctor," not a "student doctor."

    If rather than becoming licensed to practice medicine unsupervised he continued his schooling to become an epidemiologist, it doesn't mean he isn't an MD or DO (whichever he received from medical school), right?

    Edit: Ah, the hangup is over the word "physician." That's...okay that seems silly to me but I guess I generally do hear that word in the context of "licensed physician." So I can understand objecting to its use for someone who is not licensed.

  • Fahrenheit is demonstrably better for describing temperature as experienced by a human.

    I used to say this exact thing. I decided to be scientific about it and test it by learning Celsius and trying it for a few months.

    I have not gone back. It has been seven years. All my devices are still reporting Celsius to me.

    I was enjoying the process just because of the novelty of learning a new temperature scale, but when I experienced my first winter with Celsius I knew I’d never go back.

    0 being freezing is so much more useful than you’d think. 23°F doesn’t really mean anything to me, but -5°C means “as far below freezing as 5°C is above freezing.” It inherently provides context without having to do math.

    Also, the degrees being “larger” makes them more meaningful and thus easier to learn.

    If you want to try what I did, here are some useful steps. First, this rhyme: “30 is hot, 20 is nice, 10 is chilly, 0 is ice.”

    More importantly, here’s the heuristic I came up with: memorize the 10s. So 10°C = 50°F, 20°C = 68°F, 30°C = 86°F (easy to remember 68 and 86 because they’re reversed). Then memorize the 5s. You can always find them because they’re 9°F off from the 10s. 25°C = 77°F for example.

    Once you have those points memorized, you can go up and down from them using 2°F per 1°C. It’s really 1.8, but since at most you’ll be 2°C away from a certain value, the most you’ll ever be off is 0.4°F. So if the weather app tells you it’s 22°C, you start at 68°F and add 4 to get to 72°F (it is actually 71.6 but who cares?). If it says 23°C, you start at 77°F and subtract 4 to get 73°F (actually 73.4, but again who cares?).

    I used this heuristic until I didn’t really need it anymore. I still use it if someone asks me the temperature, because I live in the US and no one knows Celsius. So I quickly convert and give them their Fahrenheit value. But at this point I don’t really need to do so personally.

    And like I said, I much prefer Celsius even for describing weather. It has really taught me how arbitrary both scales are. A co-worker of mine said, “Yeah but 100° sounds hot.” I replied, “The first time a colleague in India told me it was 40° outside, that sounded hot.” I didn’t need to convert it (didn’t bother memorizing that value because I never see it where I live), it just sounded hot because I knew the scale. (It’s 104°F for the record.)

    But as I touched on, I was shocked by how much the freezing point being zero mattered. It makes sub-freezing temperature values so useful. I hadn’t expected that, growing up I knew 32°F was freezing and was so used to that nonsense that I didn’t realize what I was missing until I experienced it.

  • It’s a delightful show. My wife and I have no children but we’ve seen probably every episode of it (we sometimes watch them before bed because they are beautiful and calming). And whenever my nieces and nephews want to watch an episode I’m like, “Oh absolutely, I’m in.”

    One of my favorite aspects of the show is that the parents will often go along with whatever game the kids want to play. The episodes are short so it’s sort of realistic. The parents have jobs and whatnot, but they can take a few minutes out of their day to play. And the show manages to communicate concepts like sharing and kindness without ever seeming preachy or teachy. It’s organic.

    I strongly recommend it. I’m confident every episode is available on the high seas if you don’t want to get Disney+.
