    It also provides a marginally fun experience for the few of us who like learning new glyphs. I am one of those people and I enjoy that guy’s posts. I’m not saying you have to, I’m just saying your experience isn’t representative of everyone’s. Neither is mine, obviously.

    (I taught myself to read Aurebesh and have it loaded on my ereader so I can read with a different alphabet for fun. I’m well aware I’m not representative of the greater population in this regard. 😅)

    It’s a Nocebo Effect! Placebo is Latin meaning “I will please,” and Nocebo is “I will harm.”

    MSG is a really common one. It’s in all kinds of foods, and if people don’t know it’s there it won’t affect them. But if they do know it’s there, or even think it’s there, it can harm them. In school I heard about a study where they gave people who claimed to be MSG sensitive two meals, Chinese food and Italian food. They said the Chinese meal (which contained no MSG) gave them MSG effects, and the Italian meal (chock-full of MSG) did not. 😂

  • Oh most definitely. We generally have a pretty good collection of cheeses for snacking.

    My personal favorite lately is a Carolina Reaper pepper jack. It’s phenomenal. When we first started getting it it was so hot it gave me hiccups, though I’ve gotten used to it since.

  • I like to make smash burgers. The first time my wife and I had people over for burgers, very early in our marriage, she wanted to buy cheddar and swiss and gouda to give people options. Which is fine and all, but I begged her, “Please, trust me on this. I have the cheese covered.”

    Deli-style American is the greatest burger cheese. Don’t get me wrong, plenty of other cheeses are good on burgers, but if you want just a staple burger, I recommend a good American cheese. None of that Kraft Singles shit, get the good stuff.

  • I’ve always liked KitKat. It’s a good candy bar. But when I learned that Nestlé makes KitKat in the rest of the world, and Hershey makes it in the US, I knew I needed to try some of the forbidden Nestlé KitKat. (Forbidden both because we don’t have it in the US, and also because fuck Nestlé).

    Now any time I travel outside the US, I come home with a bag of Nestlé KitKats. They’re so much better than the Hershey version, which is already good!

  • Also yes. My wife says that to her, Baroque tuning sounds basically like a half-step below what’s written (which is pretty close).

    This explains, IMO, why so much well-loved Baroque music is in D major. D♭ major is such a beautiful key, after all! 🙂

  • Choirs are really good at being in tune with one another, but not necessarily in tune with absolute pitch. So if you’re a singer with absolute pitch, your life is looking at a note on a page, knowing what that note SHOULD sound like, but then singing a slightly off-pitch note to be in tune with everyone else. Or even a completely different note if the group has shifted enough.

    Or if a group decides that a piece isn’t in a good range for someone, and they decide to sing in a different key, for most people it’s really easy. Take the new starting note and go. But if you have absolute pitch you have to transpose on the fly if you’re sight reading.

    That said, I think given the choice I’d take absolute pitch. My wife has it and she can sight read so much better than I can.

  • When you superglue two surfaces together, optionally brush them with some sandpaper first, then apply the glue, then exhale on the glue before trying to stick the two surfaces together. The moisture in your breath helps the adhesive set up faster, and the roughened surfaces from the sandpaper will add surface area to create a stronger bond.

    (I’ve learned these lessons from gluing a LOT of 3D printed parts together.)

  • The OneBlade is a perfect example of how easy it is to market a good product. I happened to see a commercial for this in 2017 and all the commercial did was lay out exactly how the product worked. Didn’t have to be flashy or attention grabbing or funny. And holy shit did the product live up to the marketing. I love that thing. And it has lasted, too. Besides replacing blades, I’ve had the same one for over nine years now.
