  • Banning money lending has historically been about as effective as banning alcohol/drugs, gambling, prostitution, etc. People are going to do it, no matter what, so you might as well make it legal and regulate it well.

  • I work in mental health and I’ve definitely met patients who have low IQ scores. However, even without getting into clinically significant low IQ ranges, I can virtually guarantee you that you’ve met people who have sub-100 IQs. 100 is the average human IQ score. You haven’t gone through life this far without meeting people who fall a few points below it, just as you haven’t failed to meet people who score above it. A person with a 95 IQ is not going to be able to be distinguished from a person with a score of 105 by someone who doesn’t have substantial training in assessing IQ (and even then, most experts would have to formally test people to detect subtle differences like that).

  • The U.S. as a generalized complaint about the country. I understand complaints about the current government, but condemning the country makes about as much sense as condemning all Israelis for the actions of their current government, or all Russians for the actions of theirs, or all Chinese for the actions of the CCP. People are so eager to hate on Americans, and they don’t realize they’re as human as the rest of us, their society as complex as any. Lemmy is rife with anti-American commentary. It’s sad.

  • Can someone please explain to me the logic behind allowing states to redistribute their districts every few years? The problem isn’t that the GOP redistricts in a way to oppress black voters or that the Dems redistrict to support them, it’s that we allow these shenanigans at all. Why are we allowed to have these battles in the first place? There has to be a better solution.

  • Trans status is about gender identity; gay/lesbian/bisexual is about sexual orientation.

    So, a trans woman (MtF) who likes women is a lesbian, because she identifies as a woman who likes women. Her sex identified at birth is not considered a legitimate factor. Likewise, a trans woman (MtF) who likes men is not a gay man, she is a straight woman.

  • I’m willing to bet your situation is more common than you or anyone else realizes in society, simply because we haven’t been trained to recognize it as a problem. I would talk to your wife about it and ask if she’s willing to engage in some couples’ counseling. If she’s not, that’s a pretty good sign your marriage might best end.

  • For its reputation, the actual story is kind of meh. The point-and-click computer game based on it was pretty good, and has a potentially happier ending (if you do things right). I do think there are segments of the story that are very quotable (mainly just AM), and it’s conceptually interesting.
