  • So what role are they fulfilling?

Well, right now, the role of fluffing up Donald Trump's ego with big silver letters at taxpayer expense.

I feel this a lot in this administration. The government actually is too big and it actually does need to be reigned in and seeing some (not all) of these institutions destroyed or crippled is actually gratifying for exactly the reasons you mention. I just wish it wasn't accompanied with a side of "here's some piss on your head, it must be raining." These idiot cosplaying shitheads are not the right tools for the job.

  • Ah yes, the Cox Communications model.

  • Hey I just did it! I completed my migration today. The only reason I keep a desktop around at all is for gaming and I've been locked into Windows for years because of it, but no more. Steam is a given, but I'm running games off Epic and Gog through Heroic and standalone games using Lutris (ESO and Elite Dangerous so far). Not a single problem with any of them.

Mint is great, the only complaints I have are minor and I can easily deal with them. Like when you launch things, you don't always get a cursor animation to tell you you successfully set something in motion and you just have to wait for the window to pop up. That kind of thing.

  • I highly recommend to everyone just turning off your watch history on YouTube. You will not be given recommendations and you have to make a search for something in order to get anything at all to watch. Only works on desktop/laptop though. I successfully kept my parents away from all these destructive algorithms (I managed to keep them totally off Facebook, et al), but YouTube got them because you cannot turn off recommendations when using YouTube apps on phones/tablets/TVs - and it single-handedly turned them into right wing sycophants over about a four year period (to be fair, they were already the religious type).

  • I mean, the core idea of the technology - that a single monolithic file can be broken up into a torrent of smaller packets and losing the connection won't mean that you lose your progress towards downloading the big file - doesn't require that you also act as a seeder. Personally, I'm fairly sure Steam uses something like this behind the scenes, as their delivery system, because you can interrupt it and it will continue once you resume.

  • I like JavaScript a lot and would be excited by its use in this context.

  • Ah yes, White Christmas. That episode fucked me up. It's a depiction of hell, straight up. And heaven is depicted similarly in San Junipero - not sure if you have seen that one.

  • Not just Emmerich, but Devlin as well. I'm worried about this. They tried to reboot the movies in 2014 and pitched a TV show in 2019. They're both on the record as being salty about SG-1, and I understand why they were salty about it but it's well beyond them now and after all these years, they're gonna come in totally play ball, just like that? And this while Malozzi and Wright are "consulting producers," meaning they give money to the production to get their names on it but they will be largely ignored. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm worried.

  • Awesome. 👍 There's variations in stoves and beans, etc, so if for some reason they're too al dente, just keep cooking in 15 minute increments until you're where you want to be.

  • That looks and sounds great! I use navy beans in my seven vegetable soup.

  • The great thing is you are in control. My navy beans, for example (and you should try them, they have such a great flavor when cooked in salted water as described) - if you don't want mush, just cook them for 1 hour (instead of 2) after the soak. They will be discrete and the skins will be intact and they will be absolutely al dente. I bet you'll dig them.

  • For 1/2 lb beans I use 3 cups water and 1/2 Tbs kosher salt.

  • It does make a difference. It's not preservation, the beans will still go bad, but soaking and cooking in salt water reduces the water available to microbes and inhibits their growth. The result is (and I have observed this directly) the beans last about twice as long in the fridge before they start to have that "I'm not gonna eat that" appearance and smell.

  • OMG another Derry Girls DS9 mashup! And it's good too. 👏

  • “It was necessary to make changes, but not in this way, sacrificing our civil rights and liberties that are enshrined in our Constitution,”

Oh now he's concerned about civil rights, now that he's gonna be losing some weight. Yeah OK bud.

  • Funniest foreign language TV show of all time, lol. I fr had to have subtitles going the whole way but I cried laughing at times. I'm so in love with Saoirse.

  • I partially switched to Linux this week, I had an older Windows machine just laying around so I decided to install Linux (I went with Mint) sit it next to my regular Windows machine and set up a switch to easily switch between them. That way if I really need Windows, I still have it. I don't think I will.

I'm still configuring the (now Linux) machine and getting everything like I like it, and all I keep wondering is why I didn't try this sooner. There are so many cool things (like sftp right in the File Manager? right on). I have no complaints.

Steam has run every game I've tried with only minor tweaks (switching to recommended Proton versions for each game, basically). Gaming is not a problem on Linux anymore. I've run old games (Torchlight II, Portal 2, Skyrim) and new games (Oblivion Remastered, Baldur's Gate) and the only problem has been my shit-ass video card just can't run them basically (1050Ti, time to upgrade, lol).

A little while doing all this and I'll convert the Windows machine to Linux and be rid of Windows altogether. Before the end of the year, hopefully. Everyone should give it a try.

  • In the age of LLMs, it's pretty well guaranteed that it's going to be far worse than described in a study from five years ago. Anecdotally, it feels to me like closer to half if not more of the responses I get are engagement bait. It's not just corpo, a lot of it is government trolls trying to shape opinion, domestic government and foreign governments. I don't post anymore at all - just read - and that only in my very niche communities that aren't likely to be targeted for this kind of bullshit.
