  • I knew we were screwed back when all the CCTVs went up and became normalized. The spirit of it was nothing new. Just the over the top visibility of it and it not shattering the public's perception of the western worlds viewpoints on our being some sort of example of a free world

  • It's real hear no evil, speak no evil, see no evil. And all this outreach to children we always talk about on the left has seemed pretty crappy for results in the last 40 years at least. Conservatives speak to teens just as well if not better without shying away from trying to get adults of all ages on their side

  • Already switched to an Android box since Roku was getting crappy fast. Projectivity launcher. Still need a fork to go mainstream to reign in Googles app developer shenanigans. If memory prices weren't so screwed up, would have been a perfect time for Steam Machines to push regular Linux as an HTPC closer to mainstream

  • Sweet. Once handbrake and other programs like kdenlive support export in it, I'll start encoding new stuff in it, at least for testing it out. It'll be slow but that's fine. A couple years for hardware decoders in desktop/laptop graphics cards. More for mobile. A couple more for hardware encoders. Then there's the AI hardware shortage that'll make adoption even slower. VVC is already practically dead. It'll be slow for adoption but AV2 is going to be running almost unopposed with how little has happened with VVC in 6 years

  • I bought an android box specifically because of the obvious enshittification coming from Roku. Default Android TV sucks. Not as bad as Samsungs but still sucks. Projectivity launcher and others good. Roku, Apple TV, Samsung, LG - all leave you at the mercy of these companies wanting to leech all they can from you

  • When I started with Linux like 15 years ago, I felt I needed a ccleaner replacement and it's rarely ever been necessary. Something I'll run once in however many years for no good reason

  • My standard orders are cabeza and abobada or al pastor. Whatever the taco shop has listed

Former Microsoft VP says Microsoft missed the AI wave like the internet and mobile, as Copilot scales back in Windows 11

  • Keepassxc and whatever I'm using off f droid for Android. Then is sync with proton drive. Works well for me. I do the same for my one time password backups. You don't even need to pay for a subscription to proton. These are small files. Free version is good enough

  • Please show us proof of code in the Linux kernel and in FreeBSD kernel that would suggest Linux is more susceptible to exploits. How about explaining SELinux to us and the equivalent in FreeBSD and how they compare. If you can't, why make assertions of things you should have the self awareness to know you don't know and understand?

  • I turned on my TV that usually auto boots to my onn Android box with projectivity launcher. The new Roku homescreen is trash. They've increased ads by like 5x. This is an 8 year old TV. 8 years ago there were no ads. Then a banner on the right side. Then they added a row up top. Now it's the majority of the home screen. Roku as an operating system no longer needs to exist

  • I'm excited but I still detest phone number requirements. Android RCS is a huge improvement over SMS/MMS but what I'm still hoping for is federated end to end encrypted chat to become mainstream. We figured out email, we can figure out text, audio, and video chat

  • Never heard of the term. Sounds like something trying to go viral like girl dinner (though the term could already be I just don't know). I do remember how I used to do this when I was younger. Pretty much any meat doesn't have to ground tossed in a pot with different hot sauces, cheese, green onions, cilantro if there's any, onions, eggs. That was pretty much the core. Then if there were anything like pickled jalapenos in a jar in the fridge. If there was some packaged guacamole in the fridge. Could also start with a can of chili or packaged chorizo rather than any basic unseasoned meat. Any lime, squeeze some in.

It'd end up looking like a greyish brown blob. Like refried beans. I don't do this as often anymore because it was insanely calorie dense and I don't exercise like I did when I was in school playing sports. Real easy to make this mashed meat bowl taste good. Times I would put in sour cream if that was in the fridge. There just leftover cranberry sauce there in the fridge, try it out

  • Reminds me that it's been a while since Ive gotten a bag of pumpkin seeds. They're delicious

  • I've tried running it twice full-time and ended up going to Kubuntu. My bad on judging KDE Plasma from my experience with it when Plasma 5 was new. I just used Gnome all this time. A decade later KDE is actually what I was hoping Cosmic would become someday. Really polished up compared to early Plasma 5 days

I still keep pop_os on an old laptop to monitor progress. I like it. Just needs a lot more fleshing out

  • Edit: One thing I notice that is annoying are whatever conflicts between moderators and instances and seeing communities close with a message saying to join some new community on another instance. We're too small to be restarting communities because of whatever arguments mods have with instance admins. Most people do not care what instance they are on. I'll see people stereotype others based on what instance their account is based on and I'm at a loss that some people have already tribalized themselves based on fediverse instance they made their account on

The best stuff on social media is random hobbies. That needs to grow a lot. We want the people that are really into random stuff. Like maybe they're just really into fallen tree branches and for some reason there's a community out in the world all about fallen tree branches, we should want that. Over on reddit I enjoy the treelaw community. Get to learn about peculiarities of trees and property

As a start, fediverse would be nerdy. Going to be tech and privacy nerds. Gamers. Great, grow that. Be active. Get the food communities growing. Get the gardening communities growing. Bird watching. Whale watching. Train watching.

I remember earlier reddit. Like 2007-2010 for me. Back then it was nerdy as hell with a growing gaming and professional sports watching communities. A lot more comedy that wasn't global politics centric.

Lots of science, tech papers got big discussion and were the foundation for the community to grow. They had hobbies. They watched sports. Played video games. Gardening. Cooking. They'd talk about that too. Fun/educational communities

We have to be a lot more than just politics and grouches. If I just went by the grouches opinions TikTok would just be propaganda and then I see friend's on it and it's mostly cooking and comedy skits. Lots of anime memes. -- Growing the anime/manga community would be pretty big for the fediverse. Anime/manga fandoms are hyperactive posters

  • Don't know what's special about this one. Ikey Doherty though is well known for starting new distros. Managing to get them into a relatively stable and semi-popular state. Then leaving and starting a new distro. Seems very capable. No idea what happens behind the scenes for him to keep dropping out from the distros he founds

  • I remember when Solus (I think it was called Evolution or Evolve OS first) and people were calling Ikey leaving the project to start a new one eventually. Always happens

  • It's funny to frame it as bravery. Maybe that's clickbait strategy. Regardless desktop Linux is great. Only a handful of kernel level anticheat games are a problem. No you don't need adobe suite for your YouTube, Instagram, Tiktok influencer aspirations. Even open source applications that don't stack up to Adobe or Avid or whatever exceed what's needed to succeed in social media. More than enough for what amounts to solo projects
