  • I've always been confused why Breakthrough Starshot always showed the square km laser array on the ground instead of a bunch of satellites in orbit. That way you wouldn't have to account for atmospheric attenuation of the lasers PLUS you could probably get military funding for putting a gigawatt of laser capacity in orbit lmao.

    Like sure, the likes of Starlink were still just getting going when Breakthrough Starshot was conceptualised, so the idea of a large satellite constellation probably wasn't on their radar yet, but at the same time - they were talking about sending thousands of probes to Proxima Centauri so it's a mystery to me why they didn't see that kind of technological progress being possible by the time we were doing that

  • In terms of security, it's definitely best to use either zigbee or thread bulbs with a dedicated dongle plugged directly into your HA server (never use the manufacturer's hub). That way, they can only communicate with your HA directly, and there's no way for them to access the internet surreptitiously.

    I highly recommended the Sonoff dongles, I'm using the MG24 for my thread devices and an older model for my zigbee ones and they've been rock solid. Just make sure to use a USB extension cable to plug them in as your USB ports can generate electrical interference - do not ignore this advice! I did at first and it caused me problems. (Iirc the MG24 actually comes with one in the box)

    Something else to note is that you can't use the same dongle for both ZigBee and Thread at the same time, they each need to be flashed with the respective firmware for the protocol you want to use.

  • Tesseract was a web frontend for Lemmy that was used as the default for a few big instances when you visited them in your browser.

    It was discovered that the frontend had a built-in hidden blocklist of instances and users that the developer deemed to be "toxic" despite the instances on the list being some very normal mainstream ones and the list of users being so large, a significant proportion of active posters/commenters were on it.

    Users of tesseract were not told the list existed, admins/moderators could not disable it. It would just silently hide everything matching the filter without the user being any the wiser that they were missing content.

    People were obviously angry about this and the developer, instead of apologising for how they handled things, doubled down, got clowned on by practically everyone and ragequit the platform.

    Who woulda thunk a community that prides itself on user choice would be mad when someone else forces their choices onto said users...

  • So I actually have a setup similar to this, but with a mini pc (m.2 to 6x sata adapter, each one connected to a 4tb ssd - well eventually, only 2 are populated currently) and I did use a dremmel to cut through the metal top of the case and it was still a horrible sharp mess, even after I tried sanding it down. I ended up 3d printing a custom i/o shield to stop my cables (or fingers) getting sliced on it and that actually works really well!

    I'm currently switching between a Google Maps webview wrapper which has gotten particularly buggy recently, and CityMapper which has unblockable ads and only really works inside cities, not commuting in/out/between them.

    So I've been involved with the repo a little (just some basic issue triage and documentation stuff) and all I can say is that Yuliskov has made that project his life's work. If anything happens to him, we're all screwed!

  • Yes they do, it's been that way since mid-covid. They even put ads on small channels who aren't eligible for monetisation yet. All part of Google's enshittification strategy. Just use uBlock origin or a third party client

  • I was never subscribed or watched him religiously, but sometimes I'd watch something of his that popped up if it looked interesting.

    I've had his channel blocked since the 90mph in a school zone incident. Dude can get fucked for that and I hate that everyone seemed to forgive him and move on

  • A few I've watched got outed as creeps or predators (Wilbur Soot, Exurb1a, + a couple others I can't remember)

    There was one space news channel I watched who's name I can't remember now (he even showed up in one of Everyday Astronaut's live streams at one point years ago iirc) who turned out to be MAGA and started making videos about how "nAsA iS aCtUaLlY cOmMuNiSt"

    My most recent unsub was Brodie Robertson, he was apparently caught sharing loli images in a discord server or something. Apparently the guy who called him out for it is some alt-right grifter, but Brodie's defence amounted to "it's just drawings bro"

    I've been watching YouTube as my main source of entertainment for 15+ years so there are countless creators who's content I've just lost interest in too.
