Modern ICE cars have the exact same telemetry, even at the lower end models now. There are ways to circumvent some of the monitoring by deliberately terminating their antennas however. It really depends on the model though and whatever documentation regular drivers would be willing to share. My EV was modified this way and now I have a tiny reminder on the corner of the console that it can't connect.
This is all a bandaid of course. We either come up with a gray market of workarounds or we demand legislation to remove this shit in a privacy bill. Considering we have a mandate by Congress starting in 2027 to install AI equipped driver facing cameras to disable the car if the driver even vaguely looks incapacitated shows that it would be a massive uphill battle however.
The moment we become comfortable again will be the same when a third of us drop out of politics. Apathy is a hell of a drug.
I only hope they make voting mandatory like they do in Australia and it becomes too inconvenient not to do it. That should also come with the introduction of ranked choice voting but that's probably asking for the impossible already.
The US would be the only country to suffer in this scenario. The rest of the world would be just fine with using cheaper memory while we shoot ourselves in the foot to spite them.
My obsession isn't with range, it's with charge time. Yes I'm a bit irrational wanting a fully charged car every morning but that may not happen with a lower battery efficiency using a level 1 charger. I'm sure you'd appreciate better range efficiency like any gas car user would want better MPG.
The range is now 205 miles, from a 63-kWh battery.
That's... Not that great. For comparison, the 2022 Chevy Bolt has a similar sized battery (65kWh) but about 260 miles of range. The weight's a little less than the slate at 3,600 lbs though it still wouldn't be enough to gap the difference in performance. There's either some heavy drag introduced by the truck or some drive system inefficiencies.
A $40 dinner for two at a cheap burger place is still way more than a few more kWh/BTUs of energy use at home, even if you buy and cook something at home. Two low-tier beers at a dive bar cost more than a six pack of a nicer brew you can drink at home. I've had to do the math too many times when going out and it hurts.
I tried so hard to hold on for the chance to purchase one but my old car began to reek of moist unwashed towels thanks to all the rain. Ended up getting a sweet deal on a '22 Bolt with 13k miles for $15k. There's a way to reversibly terminate the data line with $15 worth of equipment and 10 minutes.
What's the point of even having the 4th Amendment when corporations can completely sidestep it and tell the government exactly what you're doing all the time? Corporations and the government are essentially the same entity with this massive loophole.
I can forgive and even cheer the absolute bare bones amenities it offers including no telemetry for the price. The hardest pill to swallow is the lackluster battery range and max charge rate.
