  • This is all a cultural issue. Little kids are read to less often by their parents and they're left with an iPad or iPhone to shut them up when they're upset. The moment they get hooked on the dopamine of colorful YouTube videos like Cocomelon and pay to win games their brains simply seek out those cheap hypnotic thrills like a geriatric in front of a slot machine. Of course a plain static book won't give them the stimulation they seek, especially when they're not fully literate yet to appreciate it.

    This problem compounds itself later on in school when they either refuse to pay attention at all in class or throw tantrums because for the first time in their lives they're forced to go without their drug of choice for longer than a few hours. A lot of this damage is could've been prevented by their parents had they the discipline to not use an addictive digital pacifier at a critical age.

  • I guess chronologically speaking it's more of a prequel. Maybe The Last Crusade fits the bill a little better. Both are excellent films nonetheless.

    Besides that we have The Dark Knight, Toy Story 2, The Empire Strikes Back, Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan, Evil Dead 2 (if you consider a reboot is okay), Army of Darkness (if you consider Evil Dead 2 to be its own start), Godfather 2, Paddington 2, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret of the Ooze.

  • There are already a bunch of good, high profile books here so I'll throw one in that's a little less known. Feed by M.T. Anderson is a great cyberpunk dystopia. It shows the perils of ab America completely bought out by corporate interests, with government basically surrendering its functions to them. Schools are sponsored by companies, the oceans are so polluted hardly anything lives in them anymore, and everyone has a VR brain implant that basically acts as a more addictive form of TikTok.

    This book was written well before smartphones and social media propaganda was a thing and it's rather striking how accurately it portrays modern day society in a lot of ways. Considering we're not quite at the dystopian level described in the story yet it's more of a cautionary tale of what can come.

  • They were somewhat subsidized thanks to a special STEM program that gave a small stipend for textbooks so it helped a lot. Still, I wish everyone who wants a proper education shouldn't have to worry about the cost of their books or tuition. Life is bleak enough here in the US without needing to finance our future with ever lowering odds of success.

  • Back in my early college years I worked with a buddy doing other people's online math homework. I'd generally get a few hundred bucks per each person's semester. It wasn't a ton of money but it was good to have for buying textbooks or weed.
