  • Had something weird happen when I switched filament and I'm curious to what you guys think

  • They locked me into buying their filament by selling it $10 cheaper a spool compared even to cheap brands like Overture and by having the best refill option I've used. The RFID stuff is just the cherry on top.

    I don't see how any of this really locks you in as the printer accepts any type of filament and it only takes 3-4 clicks to setup a 3rd party filament using default settings (like "generic PLA")

  • Allowing derivative works would allow a printer manufacturer to modify a benchy model to best suit their printer's strengths, potentially defeating the purpose.

    Would it really though? That's just tweaking the print profile to work best with the printer which is the goal of the benchmark. It won't necessarily help you learn how to tweak your profile, but it does show you what your printer is capable of when calibrated correctly.

  • Nice I've been meaning to build one of these but solder so infrequently that it's not at the top of my ADHD list.

    One critique here is that your power jack is not rated for the amperage you're putting through it. Those black and green connectors are only good for 2-3A (even the listing says 2A). I have found that these work really well and claim to be rated for 10A.

    Also if your fans are only 2.7A each and the controller is 5A, there's no real need to get an 8A power supply, but this is nitpickey and doesn't really matter either way other than a small additional cost.

I put zero faith in any electronic reviews because it's so commonly gamed that there's no way to know whether you're being fed bullshit or not and the likelyhood of BS increases when it's someone who reviews these devices professionally. Even recommendations you get here could be fake or misinformed for all you or anyone else knows.

  • It was pretty obvious because the calibration lines it lays down at the beginning of the print weren't adhered to the bed, which told me that it didn't probe the bed correctly to establish the correct height and was printing with too large of an offset.

  • But you're still relying on companies to produce these parts for you and they'll only do it so long as the market is big enough to make it worth it for them.

    Open source is definitely preferable, but at this point and time, their proprietary parts aren't an issue at all as they're cheap and readily available and with the popularity of these printers, I don't see it being an issue for quite a long time. By then, I may have moved onto a new printer anyway since the market is constantly progressing.

  • Do it. I was in your shoes about a year ago and finally pulled the trigger on the X1C and haven't regretted it once. My previous printer was like the ship of Thesius with upgrades and still failed all the time. I've got probably 700-800 hours on the X1C and have only had maybe half a dozen prints fail and only one repair needed which was covered under warranty. The only maintenance needed has been greasing the screws, which it kindly informs me to do when needed.

  • I just had this happen too and it was caused by a bad z-offset reading. The nozzle hooked one of the parts on the bed that came loose and drug it around while forming the blob.

  • I just had this happen on my X1C for the same reason and was able to get it off after heating up the hotend for a minute and wiggling it loose. Zero residual damage.
