    He points out a very odd anomaly with OSX vs macOS numbers too that highlight the problem even more.

  • That will happen. And for the few who didn’t stay with it, it was because they felt improper calling me for support. I think it’s best to let them try for a while first.

    But as a counterpoint, I put my parents on Ubuntu LTS after constant tech support queries for Windows. The calls went from once per month to once per year.

    Also, it’s much easier to provide tech support for Ubuntu than Windows IMO.

  • I dropped Windows in the early 2000s. A few people saw how dependable the desktop was (and no pop-ups from anti-virus etc) and I was gradually able to help them switch too.

    I’d be cautious of switching someone since they sometimes forget they depend on an application. But for the most part they were happy with their choice.

    My point is, another benefit of switching is that it can be infectious.

  • Is it possible to instruct the browser, via extensions or something, to simply withhold that kind of information? I know websites need to render the page differently for different browsers and OS, but when it comes to things involving payment I'd rather deal with the browser quirks than get ripped off.

  • When I was a kid watching TOS reruns, it felt like the whole world was represented on the bridge of the Enterprise. As I got older and newer series came out, it felt more like Americans In Space, so I tuned out of everything post DS9.

    Would love to watch a truly global, optimistic sci-fi series or movie.

  • They seem a little unnatural to me too. It's like they force a certain perspective. The algorithmic "enhancements" don't help either, especially at night time. It's almost impossible to get a good photo at night with the iPhone, by comparison.

  • We did some amount of joking around with the camera and I don't remember getting a blur, but I was able to change settings to achieve it and get some nice effects like when car lights leave long red streaks behind them. I was lucky though, I had someone explain the main settings to me like ISO and shutter speed.

  • Most people I've mentioned it to don't seem to notice. A more obvious example is distant objects like mountains, or the moon, looking absolutely tiny. But it happens with objects just a few meters away.

  • I still have an iPhone and I prefer the pictures my Fuji Finepix took back in the 2000s. It didn't put that weird fisheye effect on landscapes that make background objects look like they're a kilometre away when they were only a few meters away. I'm still surprised by how good those pictures are, and the way the lens automatically extends and retracts is just joyful. I never think that of my iPhone.

    The pictures are more grainy, and have other shortcomings. But they look like what I saw with my eyes.
