There will be times when the struggle seems impossible. Alone, unsure, dwarfed by the scale of the enemy. Freedom is a pure idea. It occurs spontaneously and without instruction. Random acts of insurrection are occurring constantly. There are whole armies, battalions that have no idea that they've already enlisted in the cause. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear.

  • I can see why The Scream jumped out as unique with its surreal image, but in his 205 works he's got a few that are decent paintings. Just not as eye catching. And I'm no expert, so maybe someone with knowledge of use of color or flow or whatever could say what level he was.

  • I've partially closed one before when I was by the window to help block some of the light but still allow me to look out. It was also a half-filled plane and I had the whole row. If someone beside me was sleeping or reading and it was too bright I would have closed it fully.

    Just be aware of your surroundings and others. Too many people are so deep into their own stuff they don't see others around them or what might help them.

  • That sounds right. Have an outline of what might be necessary for a situation, but don't over explain it. And while it's for visual media, I think Roddenberry's suggestion also works. Don't take out a technology and explain it, just show it in use (don't tell). The reader will get it.

  • That gets into the "why can't they do this" part of transporters. If they can do too much, then lots of things become unnecessary. Lots of episodes where the transporter cures an illness or gets people out of a situation. IRL it's what you want, but not in a story (insert three panel "intro problem/quick solution/credits")

    They explained Riker's as a very unique situation that couldn't be duplicated (convenient). Ignored various episodes that solved it through transporter filtering, never using it again.

    What about the mass problem? Did the transporter create more mass for the two Rikers? (It's a particle beamer, not energy) Did Tuvok have double the mass? Is this a good way to lose weight?

    As a new scifi writer, I've run into that problem of where to cut off trying to explain too much about the pretend technology I'm using and hope the reader accepts that it just works that way and stop asking questions.

  • It's been a while since I actually watched it, but the damage was more to the rest of the crew than to Tuvix. Letting him interact with them and become a new individual created the situation. There's still the issue of how he felt, and that's unavoidable, but he also had no previous life to lose and would be right back where he came from afterward (nowhere). SNW showed stasis fields are a thing for critical medical situations, so he should have been put into one until they figured out what to do.

    So Janeway did do something wrong, just not the moral trap people want to use.

    Why don't we have this now? I used to say they weren't needed as much because we had the internet and everything right there, but lately the internet sucks worse than not having any of it. That's such a first world problem statement to say, but when it's 90%+ low content garbage and the search engines are crap now... how do you find the good stuff?

  • Yes. You can either give them your real one, or not. That's the point being made. Actually the point of the whole page is that just loading a website tells a huge amount about you, even if you are behind a vpn and extensions to minimize your fingerprint. You are a product for sale.

  • The funny part is, it sounds like he could have been successful, but it sounds like his prompting for the port omitted a lot of important things to consider. He may have just done "make this run on a Mac". I think if he had mentioned it was a port, one of the major LLMs would have known to change enough about it to make it different and avoid this.

  • It's just not great in Wine. I ran across someone else's post just now asking for any other editor that can do comparison editing like it because of that fact. It's so useful in Windows, but graphically it's a pain in anything else, and really needs a port. A legit one.

  • Imagine UBI and allowing robots and AI for the mundane tasks that are dangerous or boring. The jobs no one wants to work.

  • Young adult in the 80-90s was peak. I think things would be different if we could take a glimpse into the future and realize how good we had it. There were problems, but most weren't predicaments yet. And it's definitely the era that we point back to and say "we didn't listen".
